Hanuman Ansh has become one of the most unexpected success stories of 2026. The film, based on the life of spiritual leader Neem Karoli Baba, opened to a modest Rs 10 lakh on August 7 but has since turned into a theatrical phenomenon. What makes this success remarkable is that the film was made on a budget of just Rs 2 crore and featured no major stars. Yet it has connected with audiences in ways that big-budget films have failed to do.

The film’s box office journey defies conventional logic. By Day 28, Hanuman Ansh had collected Rs 72.88 crore net in India, with its India gross standing at Rs 85.97 crore. On Day 28 alone, the film added Rs 11 crore net from 7,055 shows, a 41.9 per cent jump from the previous day. The film has now become the most profitable movie of 2026, beating Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 in terms of returns on investment.

How a Film With No Stars Found Its Audience

The film’s success did not happen overnight. After its Rs 10 lakh opening, the film gradually built an audience through word of mouth. The first three days saw collections of Rs 10 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 30 lakh respectively, while the entire opening week managed only Rs 1.08 crore.

But something changed in the weeks that followed. The film’s fourth week was particularly strong. It collected Rs 6.25 crore on Friday, Rs 9.25 crore on Saturday and Rs 12.75 crore on Sunday. It then earned Rs 5.50 crore on Monday and Rs 8.50 crore on Tuesday. The Tuesday figure was notable because the film earned more than the Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups, which collected Rs 8.20 crore on its seventh day.

“This small-budget film with a non-star cast is a crucial case study for the entire Indian film industry. It proves that true conviction and powerful storytelling always triumph over massive budget films at the box office.” – Madhur Bhandarkar, filmmaker

Why the Film Connects With the Heartland

What makes Hanuman Ansh different from other films? The answer lies in its simplicity. The film follows the life of Neem Karoli Baba in its purest form, without unnecessary gimmicks or attempts to manufacture spectacle. It narrates the spiritual leader’s miracles in a way that feels authentic to its audience.

The film has found a particularly strong connection with older generations. These are people who grew up watching BR Chopra’s Ramayan on Doordarshan and are now in their 60s and 70s. For years, filmmakers have ignored this audience, focusing instead on violent thrillers and slow-motion action sequences.

Hanuman Ansh has finally given this audience a film that takes them back to simpler times — without forcing a political message or propaganda into the narrative. The film’s appeal was evident in a two-tier city in Rajasthan, where the only surviving theatre was packed on a Thursday afternoon. Families from nearby villages had travelled to watch the film. Women dressed in colourful poshaks and sarees were making reels. Older members of the audience were being helped up the stairs by their adult children.

“#Hanumanansh is not a movie it’s a satsang, beautifully woven short stories of people who had first hand experience of #neemkaroribaba. Skip your therapy and go watch it.” – Kangana Ranaut, actor and BJP MP

A Story Told With Honest Intent

Director Vishal Chaturvedi chose to tell a simple story in pure Hindi, relying on authentic performances rather than star power. The film follows a grief-stricken boy whose search for his late mother ultimately leads him towards a life of spiritual discovery and divine service.

Shobhinaw Satyaa plays Neem Karoli Baba in the film. His performance has emerged as one of the film’s key talking points, with audiences noticing his resemblance to the revered spiritual figure. Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar praised his performance as “purely natural and flawless.”

The film is part of a planned trilogy. When it was announced on February 20, 2026, it was revealed as part of a three-part series. Director Vishal Chaturvedi has now confirmed that the team has already begun working on the second part, which will focus on important chapters from Neem Karoli Baba’s life, including his birthplace in Firozabad.

Bollywood’s Lack of Support

Despite its success, Hanuman Ansh had to fight for screens. Director Vishal Chaturvedi revealed that the film’s show count dropped from 250 to just 25, with major multiplexes initially sceptical about screening it.

Chaturvedi said several people from the industry called to congratulate him only after the film began performing well. He chose not to name them because they had declined to help when he approached them earlier.

“People discourage you, saying this content wouldn’t work, but mostly don’t know what is going to work, but yet they pass on their gyaan to others. The industry is filled with confused people.” – Vishal Chaturvedi, director
