Shweta Tripathi is back with Mirzapur: The Movie and she has some honest things to say about the media. The actor opened up about how actors are often asked political questions they do not have full knowledge about. She believes this trend does not help anyone and only creates unnecessary headlines.
Tripathi spoke to Hindustan Times about her experience of being in the public eye for years. She talked about how her words can be taken out of context and how she handles that pressure. She also shared what she wants to learn from her famous character Golu from Mirzapur.
‘You Say One Thing and Another Gets Reported’
Shweta Tripathi has been in the industry for a long time. She knows how media works. But she still finds it tricky to talk to the media sometimes. The rise of digital media and social media has made things harder for public figures.
She explained this with a simple Hindi phrase. “While talking to the media, it is like aap bhai kya cheez bolte ho, uska kya nikal aa jaata hai (you say one thing and another is reported),” she said.
She added that we live in a world full of information. People consume content constantly. One line or one clip from an interview can be taken out of context and spread everywhere.
“We are living in a world of information overload, unending consumption, and constant entertainment. Toh kaunsi line kahan, kaunsa clip kahan lag gaya (which line or clip is taken out of context), that matters.”
Tripathi said she has become less worried about how people see her over the years. But she admitted that there is always a chance of her words being interpreted in a different way than she intended.
“I was always fearless, but your remarks can be taken out of context. It may not be your intention, but it comes out in a different manner.”
The Podcast Example
Shweta Tripathi shared a recent experience to explain her point. She appeared on a podcast that talked about population and having children. Her first reaction was clear. She wanted to share her opinion.
But then she had a second thought. She wondered if people would actually understand what she meant. She worried about how her words might be edited and used.
“And I’m like, ‘I don’t know if people will understand what I am trying to say.’ But then, eventually, I decided to go ahead because I couldn’t stay frightened.”
She chose to speak her mind instead of staying quiet out of fear. She believes that people who want to understand will understand. Those who do not, might understand later.
“Whoever wants to understand will, and whoever doesn’t will probably understand in 10 years’ time, if not today. I am not going to not say my opinion for the fear of, ‘Is clip ka edit kya hoga?’”
For Shweta Tripathi, staying silent just because a statement could be edited or misunderstood is not an option.
What She Wants to Learn from Golu
Shweta Tripathi has played Golu Gupta in Mirzapur for years. The character is known for being bold and speaking her mind. Tripathi said she does not feel completely media-trained. Instead, she wants to bring Golu’s honesty and confidence into her own life.
“I want to be honest. That is one thing that I am taking from this, being respectfully honest. It’s almost like how Golu (her character in Mirzapur) is.”
She explained that Golu talks the same way to everyone. Whether she is talking to Munna or the school principal, she is bold. That is something Tripathi wants to take from the character.
She even writes about this in her morning pages. She wants to carry that fearlessness into real life.
‘Ask Us About Acting and Our Life’
Shweta Tripathi also spoke strongly about the trend of asking actors political questions. She believes this practice serves no real purpose.
She said actors understand that they have a responsibility with what they say. But they do not have complete knowledge about many issues. They do not know what happens in closed rooms, in official documents, or in government decisions.
“We are actors, and we get that there is a kind of responsibility with what we say. But of course, we don’t know what is happening in many rooms, in documents, and in official decisions.”
She pointed out the problem with this situation. When actors are asked something they do not fully understand and they say something incorrect, people criticize them.
Her message to journalists was simple. “Arre, aap acting aur humari life ko pucho na (Ask us about acting and our life),” she said.
She also called for more respect in society. “Also, as a society, we need to start respecting each other’s opinions,” she added.

Shweta Tripathi has been promoting the film and talking about her journey with the franchise. She has played Golu Gupta across three seasons of the series and now in the movie. She said the film is not a repeat of season one. She described it as “Thaali wohi hai, masale naye hain” (the plate is the same, but the spices are new).
