HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of the Harry Potter series has made three major casting announcements for its second season. The new additions include Lenny Rush as the voice of Dobby, Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley, and Billy Barratt as young Tom Riddle. Season 2 will adapt the second book in J.K. Rowling’s series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The first season of the Harry Potter television series has completed filming and is scheduled to premiere on HBO on December 25, 2026. Season 2 is currently in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London and will begin filming in the fall of 2026.
New Cast Members Join the Wizarding World
Lenny Rush, a 17-year-old British actor known for his roles in Am I Being Unreasonable? and Doctor Who, has been cast as Dobby. In the original Harry Potter films, Dobby was created using CGI and voiced by Toby Jones. HBO has not yet confirmed whether Rush will voice a CGI character, use motion capture, or wear prosthetics to bring the house-elf to life.
Bonnie Hill, who appeared in Girl Troop versus Aliens and The Six Triple Eight, will take on the role of Ginny Weasley. This is a recasting decision. Gracie Cochrane originally played Ginny in Season 1 but exited the role due to “unforeseen circumstances,” according to a statement from her family. Hill will join the Weasley family alongside Alastair Stout as Ron, Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George, Ruari Spooner as Percy, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
Billy Barratt, who holds the record as the youngest International Emmy winner for his performance in Responsible Child, has been cast as Tom Riddle. Barratt is in his high teens, close to the age of the character in the book, who is 16. He is also known for his roles in Invasion, Bring Her Back, and Kraven the Hunter. The producers are going younger with this casting compared to the films, where Christian Coulson played the role at age 23.
Ginny Weasley Recast for Season 2
The recasting of Ginny Weasley is one of the most talked-about changes. Cochrane, who played Ginny in Season 1, will not return for the second season. Hill will now portray the character as Ginny becomes more central to the story in Chamber of Secrets. In the second book, Ginny arrives at Hogwarts for her first year and becomes entangled with Tom Riddle after she starts writing in his magical diary.
The decision to recast the role was announced jointly by Cochrane and her family. They cited personal reasons for her departure. HBO has not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the exit.
Dobby and Tom Riddle Join the Story
Season 2 of the Harry Potter series will introduce several new characters who play important roles in the Chamber of Secrets storyline. Dobby, the house-elf who serves the Malfoy family, becomes a key figure as he tries to protect Harry from danger. Tom Riddle, a memory preserved in a diary, drives the central mystery of the season.
The casting of these three characters follows the earlier announcement that Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2. Harington took over the role after Nicholas Hoult left due to scheduling conflicts.
First Season Cast and Production Details
The Harry Potter television series features a cast of both new and established actors. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The ensemble also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Other cast members include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.

The series is being produced for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, while Mark Mylod is an executive producer and will direct multiple episodes. J.K. The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will premiere on HBO and stream exclusively on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. Season 2, based on Chamber of Secrets, is scheduled to begin filming in the fall of 2026.
