The hit survival drama is getting ready to air its fourth and final season on Paramount+. Lynskey spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her experience filming the last episodes. She admitted she was “so upset” that the show was coming to an end and was “not ready” to let go of her character. The actress even mentioned she “would’ve done two more seasons” if possible.

Melanie Lynskey Praises the Final Season Storyline

During her interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lynskey did not give away any major plot points. But she did promise that the story of the fourth season “made a lot of sense”. She shared that every character gets a proper send-off.

Lynskey also talked about filming her final scene. She shot it with Warren Kole, who plays her husband Jeff. She called it “very emotional” and said they shared the “longest hug” of her life. The actress described the whole filming process for the final season as a “really fun” experience.

The star also had some thoughts about how her character is written. Lynskey noted that she kept telling the writers they were trying to give Shauna “a villain edit”. She always wants a strong reason when Shauna acts mean or angry.

What to Expect From Yellowjackets Season 4 Plot

The final season will pick up right after the events of Season 3. The teenage survivors are about to be rescued. Sophie Thatcher’s character Natalie called for help using a repaired satellite phone at the end of Season 3.

The official season description says the survivors are racing to bury their sins before rescue arrives. It also warns that “not every homecoming is a joyous one, and this one’s going to sting”. The teens will likely try to hide evidence of what they did in the wilderness.

The fourth season will show what happens right after the survivors return home. Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the show’s co-creators, told Entertainment Weekly that this is the story they have been waiting to tell. Lyle explained that bridging the gap between who the characters were before the crash and who they became is “the big payoff”.

Nickerson added that the season will explore how the characters adjust to normal life again. He asked a key question about the show’s themes: “Once those systems have come online, how do you turn them off when food is in a supermarket, when there are parents with thoughts and feelings, and just the very rigid nature of society?”

Why Yellowjackets Is Ending With Season 4

The creators originally planned for five seasons. But they decided to end the show with Season 4 because the story felt complete. Lyle explained that five seasons would have meant dragging things out. Four seasons required a faster pace, which they preferred.

Lyle said, “We really wanted to dig into as many as possible. We’re so happy we got here because, to us, this is the big payoff”. The team wanted to focus on how the characters changed from before the crash to after surviving the wilderness.

The show’s official Instagram account shared a statement from the creators in October 2025. It read, “We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end, and it’s our belief that our job — our responsibility — is to listen”.
