Matthew McConaughey sat down with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and did something he has avoided for years. He talked directly about the rumor that Woody Harrelson might be his real-life brother. The two actors have been close friends for nearly 30 years, and now they are turning that bond into an Apple TV comedy called Brothers. The show premieres on September 23, 2026.
During the September 9, 2026 episode, Fallon turned the interview into a playful investigation. The two went through a series of coincidences tied to the number nine, starting with a story about McConaughey’s mother. Fallon and McConaughey kept finding new clues to add to the mystery, turning what could have been an awkward topic into one of the funniest late-night moments of the year.
How the Brother Theory Started
The whole thing began on a family trip to Greece several years ago. McConaughey’s mother, Kay McConaughey, was there with the two actors and their families. After some wine, she looked at Harrelson and said, “Woody, I knew your dad.” Everyone noticed the pause she left after the word “knew”.
McConaughey later explained the moment on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera. “Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W,” he said. The families did some math and found that Harrelson’s father, Charles Voyde Harrelson, was on furlough at the same time McConaughey’s parents were going through their second divorce.
Harrelson’s father had a troubled past. He was convicted of the assassination of a federal judge in 1979. But Harrelson has spoken openly about the possibility of a shared father. “Woody believed it from the get-go, and I don’t believe it from the get-go,” McConaughey told Vanity Fair.
Jimmy Fallon’s Playful Investigation
Fallon did not let the serious side of the story slow down the fun. He pressed McConaughey on every detail. The conversation kept circling back to the number nine. Fallon joked that the connection between McConaughey’s mother and Harrelson’s father supposedly happened “nine months before” McConaughey was born.
The number nine kept appearing. Harrelson’s parents married in 1959 and their marriage lasted four years and 11 months, which equals 59 months. Add McConaughey’s birth year, 1969, and the digits add up to nine. Harrelson grew up in Midland and McConaughey in Longview, a drive of about six and a half hours today. McConaughey joked that in 1969, with slower highway speed limits, it would have taken nine hours.
“The number appears again with Highway 108, since 1+0+8 equals nine. McConaughey sent Jimmy Fallon to seat 108, but nothing is found; seat 109, however, has a Brothers card announcing the show’s September 23 premiere on Apple TV”.
The final clue came when they noted that September is the ninth month of the year. None of this proves anything, but it made for a memorable segment on late-night television.
What Matthew McConaughey Said About the DNA Test
Neither actor has taken a DNA test. McConaughey has been open about why the idea makes him uncomfortable. “He feels like he is losing a father,” Harrelson said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2023. “But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother”.
McConaughey echoed that feeling on Ripa’s podcast. “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game,” he said.
Harrelson told Esquire in 2023 that they had never actually done the test. “I don’t know because we haven’t done the testing,” he said. “But there are some remarkable coincidences”. The two families have treated each other as extended kin regardless of any test results. McConaughey’s kids call Harrelson Uncle Woody, and Harrelson’s kids call McConaughey Uncle Matthew.
Inside the New Apple TV Comedy Brothers
The new show takes the real-life rumor and turns it into a full comedy series. Brothers follows McConaughey and Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves. The story begins after Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, prompting him to take his family to Matthew’s Austin ranch. Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally reveals a family secret that suggests the two longtime friends could actually be half-brothers.
Woody becomes determined to uncover the truth, while Matthew is juggling a potential run for Governor of Texas. The show is described by Apple as a “heartfelt, chaotic, and wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame, and the messy line between myth and reality”.
The series comes from showrunner Lee Eisenberg, who previously worked on The Office and co-created Apple TV’s WeCrashed. McConaughey and Harrelson also serve as executive producers. The eight-episode season comes from Paramount Television Studios.
The cast includes Natalie Martinez as Valentina, Brittany Ishibashi as Joy, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, and Oona Yaffe.

A Friendship That Goes Back to EDtv
McConaughey and Harrelson first worked together on the 1999 film EDtv. McConaughey recalled their first meeting during a 2020 conversation at Magic City Books. “There was tequila involved in that night; it was a bit of an impression, a bit hazy. But we met one night. I’d always wanted to meet you, and then we worked together, I think it was ’97, on EDtv,” he said.
They later worked together on Surfer, Dude in 2008 and The Free State of Jones in 2016. Their most famous collaboration came in 2014 with the first season of HBO’s True Detective, where they played detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. Both received Emmy nominations for their roles.
McConaughey once described their bond on The Queen Latifah Show in 2014. “Woody and I get along great. There’s a lot of laughter when he and I are together. Where I start, he ends; where he ends, I start. And we just roll with each other back and forth,” he said.
