The Geetu Mohandas directorial was positioned as a pan-India blockbuster, carrying a reported budget between ₹500 crore and ₹1,000 crore. Instead of joining the ₹1,000 crore club, the film is now struggling to cross even ₹350 crore worldwide, placing it alongside some of Indian cinema’s most expensive disappointments. Toxic Box Office Performance: From Record Opening to Rapid Collapse
Toxic opened with a thunderous ₹101.10 crore net in India on Day 1, with a worldwide gross of approximately ₹145 crore. It was the second-biggest opening for an Indian film in 2026, behind only Dhurandhar: The Revenge. However, the momentum vanished almost immediately. Day 2 saw a sharp 70% drop to ₹37.65 crore net, and by the first Monday, daily earnings had fallen into single digits. By Day 15 (September 9), the film was collecting just ₹60 lakh across India, with a worldwide gross of less than ₹1 crore for the day.
As of September 10, 2026, Toxic has earned ₹247 crore net in India and approximately $4.5 million (₹43.30 crore) from overseas markets. Its worldwide gross stands at ₹339 crore, with trade estimates placing its global net earnings around ₹270 crore. These numbers fall far short of what a film of this scale needed to break even.
Budget vs. Recovery: The Massive Shortfall
The exact budget of Toxic has never been officially confirmed, with reports citing figures ranging from ₹500 crore to ₹1,000 crore. Even using the most conservative estimate of ₹500 crore as the total investment, the film is still approximately ₹230 crore short of its landing cost in net box office earnings.
A detailed financial breakdown by Pinkvilla estimates the film’s total revenues at around ₹245 crore, while total expenses, including production, marketing, interest, and distribution, reach approximately ₹525 crore. This puts the net loss at nearly ₹280 crore — and that figure does not include full remuneration for Yash, who also served as a producer and co-writer on the project. With Yash’s fee factored in, losses could exceed ₹300 crore, making Toxic potentially the biggest financial failure in Indian cinema history.
How Toxic Compares to Adipurush
Adipurush, directed by Om Raut and starring Prabhas, was released in 2023 with a reported budget of ₹500-550 crore. The film managed a worldwide gross of approximately ₹350 crore before ending its theatrical run. Its net earnings in India were around ₹330 crore, resulting in an estimated loss of ₹220 crore.
Toxic’s worldwide gross of ₹339 crore is already lower than Adipurush’s final haul. While both films opened well and collapsed due to poor word-of-mouth, Toxic’s fall was steeper and faster. Adipurush had a longer theatrical run and benefited from a stronger initial hold in certain markets. Toxic, by contrast, lost 95% of its Hindi shows and was completely wiped out in Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam by Day 14.
On paper, Toxic’s shortfall of ₹230-280 crore is higher than Adipurush’s ₹220 crore loss, which suggests that Yash’s film is a bigger flop when adjusted for scale and recovery potential.
Yash’s Reaction to the Toxic Setback
Yash’s close friend and dubbing supervisor Jaidev Mohan revealed how the actor handled the disappointing response. Speaking to Prajavani, Mohan said he spoke to Yash twice by phone after the release and could sense pain in his voice.
“He said ‘don’t take it to your heart, it’s done, released, now let’s leave it to the people. It’s their choice. We made this film with dedication and gave it to the audience. That’s it. You don’t dwell on it too much. Get ready, there’s more work.’”
Mohan also mentioned that more than 300,000 piracy links related to the film were taken down after its release, though this figure has not been independently verified. Despite the setback, several Sandalwood stars, including Upendra, Kiccha Sudeep, and Rishab Shetty, publicly supported Yash for taking on an unconventional role.
OTT Rights Value Plummets After Theatrical Failure
The financial damage extends beyond theatres. Toxic’s digital streaming rights, which were reportedly offered at ₹150-180 crore before release, have now dropped to approximately ₹30 crore, according to multiple industry reports. The makers had turned down the pre-release offers, hoping a successful theatrical run would drive the price higher. That strategy backfired badly.
The film’s producers, KVN Productions and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, now face the challenge of recovering their investment through a much smaller OTT deal, satellite rights, and music revenue. Music rights alone have reportedly brought in around ₹40 crore, but that is nowhere near enough to offset the massive production and marketing costs.
