Amitabh Bachchan has submitted a building plan to the Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) for a 20-room dharamshala in memory of his father, the celebrated Hindi poet Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan. The facility will come up on land the actor bought for around ₹15 crore inside The Sarayu project along Dashrath Path in Ayodhya. The ADA has opened the proposal for public objections, and construction is expected to begin in October once clearance is granted.

What Amitabh Bachchan Is Planning in Ayodhya

The proposed dharamshala will have more than 20 rooms, built to offer organised accommodation for devotees visiting the temple town. The land sits within The Sarayu, a premium project along Dashrath Path. The actor acquired this plot for approximately ₹15 crore.

An application seeking approval for the building map was submitted to the Ayodhya Development Authority. Following this, the ADA published a public notice inviting objections to the submitted layout. People have a 15-day window to raise any concerns. Once that period ends, the layout will be examined and formal approval will be granted as per rules. Construction is expected to start in October, subject to clearance.

Official Confirmation from Ayodhya Development Authority

ADA Vice Chairman Anurag Jain confirmed the development to reporters. He said the facility will provide accommodation and other organised amenities to devotees travelling to Ayodhya from different parts of the country.

“Renowned people from across the country have contributed to the grand form that Ayodhya is taking. In this sequence, renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan has also applied for the map of a dharamshala, which will have more than 20 rooms.”

Jain also noted that the proposal has been published in newspapers inviting objections. Once the stipulated period is over, it will be examined and approval will be granted as per rules. He added that the dharamshala will help provide well-organised accommodation to devotees travelling to Ayodhya from distant places.

Who Was Harivansh Rai Bachchan

Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a prominent Hindi poet and translator. He received the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to literature. He is best known for his 1935 poem Madhushala and his Hindi translations of Shakespeare’s plays. Amitabh’s mother, Teji Bachchan, was a social activist and theatre performer who also served as a director of the Film Finance Corporation of India.

The planned dharamshala adds to work Amitabh has already dedicated to his father’s memory. A memorial trust was launched in 2013 in Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s name.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Growing Ayodhya Property Portfolio

Ayodhya has become a major real estate destination for Amitabh Bachchan. His total land footprint in the temple town now exceeds ₹100 crore, making him the city’s biggest celebrity investor.

His Ayodhya purchases include:

  • Before Ram Temple inauguration (January 2024): A 5,372 sq ft plot in Haveli Avadh for ₹4.54 crore, marking his entry into Ayodhya’s property market.
  • 2024: A 10,000 sq ft plot in The Sarayu for ₹14.5 crore.
  • March 2025: A 54,454 sq ft plot about 10 km from Ram Mandir under the Harivansh Rai Bachchan Trust. This land was reportedly intended for a memorial dedicated to his father.
  • May 2025: A 25,000 sq ft plot adjacent to The Sarayu for nearly ₹40 crore.
  • March 2026: A 2.67-acre land parcel for ₹35 crore from Mumbai-based The House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL) near The Sarayu project.

Abhinandan Lodha, founder and CMD of HoABL, earlier recalled how Bachchan personally called him to buy land in Ayodhya. Lodha was in Australia in 2023 when he received a message from the actor at around 3 am. Bachchan told him, “Abhinandan ji, main UP se hoon aur mujhe Ayodhya ji mein land leni hai” (I am a native of Uttar Pradesh and I want to buy land in the holy town of Ayodhya). The actor locked the price for 15,000 sq ft at around ₹15 crore and sent the money the very next day.

He wrote: “Ji nahin huzoor, main kaam se retire nahin ho raha hoon; Angrezi mein iska matlab hota hai main ab sone jaa raha hoon. Aur wahan maanyavar aapko aane ka nimantran nahin hai.” Translated, the message reads: “No sir, I am not retiring from work any time soon; retire in English means going to sleep.
