Lioness Season 3 has officially wrapped up, and the finale delivered a twist that brings the story full circle. The Paramount+ spy thriller, created by Taylor Sheridan, dropped its eighth and final episode on Sunday, Sept. 20, and it revealed that Joe McNamara’s abduction was not the work of Russian or Ukrainian forces after all. Instead, the person behind the entire operation was someone from the show’s very first season, turning a geopolitical conspiracy into a deeply personal revenge story.
Aaliyah Amrohi Returns as the Mastermind
The season-long mystery surrounding who ordered Joe’s kidnapping was finally solved in the final minutes of the finale. Aaliyah Amrohi, played by Stephanie Nur, was revealed as the person who contracted the hit on Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña). Aaliyah was a central figure in Lioness Season 1, where she was the target of an undercover mission led by Joe.
In the first season, Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) went undercover to befriend Aaliyah and get close to her father, Asmar Ali Amrohi, an Iraqi terrorist financier. The mission ended with Cruz killing both Asmar and Aaliyah’s fiancé, Ehsan, at their wedding. Aaliyah has not been seen on the show since then, until the final scene of the Season 3 finale.
The Revenge Plot Explained
The CIA spent most of Season 3 chasing false leads. The leading theory within the agency was that Ukrainian double agent Oleksandra Balakin (Elizaveta Neretin) had orchestrated the abduction to escalate U.S. involvement in the war. Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly) were convinced Oleksandra was playing a long game, and she was executed on orders from Secretary of State Edwin Mullins (Morgan Freeman), even though the CIA had no concrete evidence against her.
The real answer was much more personal. Joe and her team learned that the kidnapping job had been placed on the open market, with contractors offered $250,000 per man to capture the senior CIA officer. One contractor explained that the plan was to abduct Joe in Virginia, transport her to Houston, and eventually hand her over to KSS, an independent terrorist organization.
The crucial clue came when the team realized the operation was not preemptive. As one character noted, “Whoever hired KSS is seeking revenge.” That realization led them back to one of the show’s biggest Season 1 storylines: the assassination of Asmar Ali Amrohi, which was carried out by Cruz under Joe’s orders.
Aaliyah’s Chilling Final Scene
The final scene of the finale showed Aaliyah in a Qatar mansion, taking a bath while a henchman informed her that the attempt to take Joe “didn’t work out” for the second time. Her response was calm and determined: “Try again. Maybe third time’s the charm”.
When asked if it would be easier to handle Joe in the U.S., Aaliyah explained her larger plan. “We have to get her out. If we get her out, the others will come to save her. And then we have them all”. Her objective is not simply to kill Joe. She wants to lure the entire Lioness team, including Cruz, to her in Qatar so she can avenge her father’s death.
A Costly Firefight and a Shocking Execution
Before the final reveal, the episode featured a violent restaurant shootout that left several characters dead or wounded. Joe ordered her team to engage Dimitri Sokolov, a Russian broker connected to her kidnapping, and Renat, one of her Belarusian abductors. The firefight killed an African diplomat, along with Randy and Tex, two members of Kyle’s quick reaction force. Renat shot Sokolov before being killed himself.
Elsewhere, Oleksandra Balakin was executed at her safehouse on Kyle’s orders. The CIA also released detainee Aleksi Yurimov back to Russia as a gesture of goodwill, hoping to cool tensions between the two nations. Secretary Mullins and Byron Westfield met with Russian Ambassador Maxim Petrov to explain the release, with Mullins stating, “Nothing,” when asked what the U.S. wanted in return, explaining that he wanted tensions to “cool down”.
Joe’s Personal Life Falls Apart
The finale also dealt a devastating blow to Joe’s personal life. After being rescued in the previous episode, Joe chose not to return home, knowing the danger to her and her team was far from over. Her decision had consequences. When she finally did go home, she discovered that her husband Neal (Dave Annable) had put their house up for sale and left with their daughters.
The moment underscored the central conflict of Joe’s character: the life she has spent fighting to protect may no longer be waiting for her. As she told Bobby (Jill Wagner), “There’s nobody left to come after me, Bobby.” Bobby’s reply proved prophetic: “There’s always somebody else, Boss”.
Fan Reactions to the Finale
Viewers took to social media to share their shock at the twist. Many fans had suspected the reveal, while others were completely caught off guard. One popular reaction noted the significance of the Season 1 score playing during the final scene, with a fan writing, “As soon as the season 1 score started playing at the end, I knew who we were going to see”.
Another viewer praised the show’s decision to bring back a female villain for what many expect to be the final season. “Aaliyah is one of the best female characters Taylor has ever written. I think it’s very symbolic that he brings her back to the fourth season, which will probably be the last. Ending a female protagonist show with a female villain is great”.

Stephanie Nur on Her Surprise Return
Stephanie Nur spoke with Entertainment Weekly about learning she would be returning to the show. “I got a message from Taylor about jumping on a call. Honestly, because him and I have worked together before, and he’s known for having an ensemble of cast that he uses in different shows, I just assumed that he was calling me about a different show, because it had been three years. And then when he called me about coming back, I was floored. I screamed, and I had to apologize on the phone”.
Nur also shared that she had no idea about the plan for Aaliyah’s return. “No, I did not. After we wrapped the first season, I kept having dreams as Aaliyah. Of course, being quite attached to this character, I’ve always thought about what happens to her and had my own scenarios. But no, I had no expectation to be back”.
