The Hindi Drishyam franchise is closing its doors with Drishyam: The Conclusion, and director Abhishek Pathak has made one thing clear: this film was never about the money. After Drishyam 2 earned ₹345 crore worldwide in 2022, the team could have rushed a third part within a year. Instead, they waited four years, with two years spent only on writing. The film releases in theatres on October 2, 2026, and brings back Ajay Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar for what Pathak calls the character’s darkest chapter yet.
Why Drishyam 3 Took Four Years To Make
Drishyam 2 was a massive hit, collecting ₹345 crore worldwide against a reported budget of around ₹50 crore. The film recovered its budget in just three days and delivered a profit of roughly ₹295 crore.
Pathak explained that the long gap was a creative choice, not a business delay. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he said:
“After the numbers Drishyam 2 did, we could have come again in a year or two. But we took four years, out of which two years went into writing. We have tried to stay relevant and ahead of what the audience might expect. Drishyam can never be a commercial decision. Nobody would do this film just to make money.”
He added that the franchise has become an emotion for many viewers. “This film has been loved by so many people that it is an emotion for them. You have to do justice to that. That has to be a creative decision, which is why it took time.”
A Completely New Story, Not A Remake
The first two Hindi Drishyam films were direct remakes of the Malayalam originals starring Mohanlal. The third part breaks that pattern entirely. Drishyam: The Conclusion tells an original story written by Pathak himself, separate from Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3, which released earlier in 2026.
Pathak told Variety:
“It’s completely different. It’s a new story. It’s nothing to do with Malayalam. It’s a very different film altogether.”
He explained that the decision to write an original script came right after Drishyam 2 released. “The moment Drishyam 2 released, I was sure I wanted to do this differently. I did not want to do a remake because it takes away from your craft. This film is written by me, so it can’t have the tag of a remake.”
The story picks up from where Drishyam 2 ended, but the journey ahead is entirely new.
Vijay Salgaonkar Turns Darker In The Final Chapter
Pathak describes Vijay Salgaonkar as a character who has grown more morally complex across the three films. The one constant, he says, is family.
“That’s been the core of this film from part one itself, anything for family.”
He noted that Vijay has “evolved into more darker shades” while audiences continue to support him even when his actions fall outside the law. Pathak also pointed to Ajay Devgn’s restrained performance in this part.
“He doesn’t speak much as a character in the film. It’s all about him just thinking.”
Vijay Salgaonkar never resorts to violence across all three films, a detail Pathak highlighted as central to the character.
Tabu And Jaideep Ahlawat Join The Fight
Tabu returns as Meera Deshmukh, the mother of the boy killed in the first film. Her character has spent years convinced of Vijay’s guilt without being able to prove it. The new trailer shows her patience has run out.
“I don’t want justice anymore. I want revenge.”
Jaideep Ahlawat joins the cast as a new investigating officer from the Crime Branch. Prakash Raj enters as a lawyer. Pathak said audiences will see a side of Ahlawat they have not seen before: “You will see a very different Jaideep Ahlawat. I don’t think he’s done something like this before.”
The trailer also shows Prakash Raj’s character warning that Vijay’s lack of formal education should not be mistaken for a lack of intelligence.
The Writing Process Behind The Twists
Keeping the story ahead of fans was a major challenge. Drishyam has built a reputation for sharp twists, and social media has made fan theories more common than ever.
Pathak shared how the team tackled this during an interview with Bollywood Hungama:
“When we were writing, we were thinking like Salgaonkar. Even when I was narrating the script to Ajay Devgn, there came a point when we brought it to a halt… and I kept asking people, ‘Now, what do you think is going to happen?’ No one could really guess it, and that was a victory in itself.”
The screenplay took about two years to complete. Pathak said he spent time reading fan theories online before identifying gaps in Vijay’s story to build the new plot around.
Trailer Launch And Cast Reactions
The trailer was launched in Goa on September 9, 2026, with the cast and makers present. Tabu addressed comparisons between the Hindi and Malayalam versions.
“It doesn’t matter if you watch it, because our film is completely different.”
Ajay Devgn confirmed there will be no fourth instalment in the Hindi version. He also said he wants Mohanlal to watch the film.
“I want Lal Sir to see the film because we will get approval that, you know, they love this. It will make me very happy.”

“Zero! I will never write it.”
He explained that the film has been written with a proper ending in mind. “I think this film has been written really well. I am not bragging here, but we have put our life and soul into this. I don’t want to bring money conversations into this film. This film deserves a good closure, and part 3 will be that for everyone.”
Drishyam: The Conclusion marks the end of a journey that began in 2015 with the Hindi remake of the Malayalam classic. Over ten years and three films, the franchise has built its own identity and fanbase. The final chapter arrives in theatres on October 2, 2026.
