Stephanie Nur never saw it coming. The actress who played Aaliyah Amrohi in the first season of Taylor Sheridan‘s Lioness had moved on after her character disappeared from the show. Three years passed. Then her phone rang.
The Season 3 finale, titled “The Unravelling,” dropped on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, on Paramount+. In its final moments, the show revealed that Aaliyah—the wealthy daughter of a terrorist financier killed in Season 1—was the mastermind behind the kidnapping and torture of CIA operative Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña). It was a twist that connected the show’s current season directly back to its very first episodes.
The Call That Changed Everything
Nur was at home when she got a message from Sheridan asking to jump on a call. She assumed he was reaching out about a different project. The two had worked together before on the Yellowstone prequel 1883, and Sheridan is known for reusing actors across his shows.
“I just assumed that he was calling me about a different show, because it had been three years,” Nur told Entertainment Weekly. “And then when he called me about coming back, I was floored. I screamed, and I had to apologize on the phone”.
The shock was genuine. Nur had kept up with Lioness even after Aaliyah didn’t appear in Season 2, but she had made peace with the idea that her character’s story was over.
“When the story continues without you, you just assume that they’ve gone in a different direction, and that’s usually how shows go,” she told TV Insider. “When the call came, because these three years had passed, it just wasn’t on the forefront of my expectations”.
Why Aaliyah Came Back
Aaliyah’s return wasn’t random. In the Season 1 finale, Aaliyah’s father and her fiancé were both killed by Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), a Lioness operative who had infiltrated Aaliyah’s life under false pretenses. Cruz and Aaliyah had also developed real romantic feelings for each other before the mission ended in bloodshed.
That betrayal left Aaliyah broken. But it also left her rich, powerful, and patient. The Season 3 finale revealed she had been funding attempts to abduct Joe—not once, but twice.
“Try again,” Aaliyah says calmly from a bathtub in a Qatar mansion. “Maybe third time’s the charm”.
Her plan is simple and brutal: get Joe out of the United States, and the rest of her team will follow to rescue her. Then Aaliyah can take them all down at once.
“We have to get her out. If we get her out, the others will come to save her. And then we have them all,” Aaliyah explains in the finale.
Nur’s Personal Connection to Aaliyah
The actress has been carrying Aaliyah with her long after Season 1 wrapped. In interviews, Nur described how the character stayed in her mind, showing up in her dreams.
“After we wrapped the first season, I kept having dreams as Aaliyah,” she told Taste of Country. “Of course, being quite attached to this character, I’ve always thought about what happens to her and had my own scenarios. But no, I had no expectation to be back”.
She even rewatched Season 1 to find clues about who Aaliyah was before the betrayal, looking for the “innocence that they’ve previously possessed”. When she returned to set, she was playing a different version of the same woman—one who had shed that innocence entirely.
The Fallout for Joe
The finale wasn’t just about Aaliyah’s reveal. Joe’s personal life fell apart in the final minutes. After surviving her kidnapping and torture, she returned home to find a “For Sale” sign outside her house. Her husband Neal (Dave Annable) had left with their children, leaving only a note behind.
Zoe Saldaña spoke about the emotional weight of that ending. She hopes the separation isn’t permanent if the show returns for a fourth season.
“Joe is a woman who holds everything together for everyone else, and she’s quietly falling apart on the inside,” Saldaña told People. “She has always been quietly falling apart, and in this season we get to see it”.
What This Means for the Show’s Future
Lioness has not been officially renewed for Season 4 yet. The Season 3 finale aired on Sept. 20, 2026, on Paramount+, with episodes released weekly starting Aug. 2, 2026. The show streams in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions where Paramount+ is available.
Nur herself doesn’t know what comes next for Aaliyah. She’s waiting like everyone else.
“He plants these seeds that could go different possible ways,” she said of Sheridan’s writing. “And then it’s never what you expect, but it always makes sense”.
For now, the final image of Lioness Season 3 is Aaliyah in a bath, calm and wealthy, ordering another attempt on Joe’s life. The woman who once fell in love with her target is gone. What’s left is someone with nothing to lose and a very long memory.
