American Horror Story returned for its 13th season with a three-episode premiere on September 24, 2026, and the show wasted no time bringing back some of its most iconic characters. The season, simply titled 13, is a franchise-wide crossover that unites characters from multiple past seasons for one big, hellish story. At the center of it all is Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon, who returned to the series after last playing a leading role in 2014’s Freak Show. And in a genuine surprise for longtime viewers, Constance’s dead son Tate Langdon, played by Evan Peters, showed up for a very unusual holiday celebration.
Constance Langdon Returns as a Caregiver in New York City
The premiere introduced viewers to Ben DeSoto (Joey Pollari), a hospice worker with a deep fear of the number 13, a condition called triskaidekaphobia. After surviving a deadly plane crash that killed his girlfriend Kira (Madelaine Petsch) and her friends, Ben takes a night job caring for a mysterious elderly man named Mr. Nas (Fedor Steer) in an apartment building called the Apollyon in New York City. The job brings him face to face with Constance Langdon, who serves as Mr. Nas’s daytime caregiver.
Constance is no longer tied to the Murder House and now spends her days looking after the strange, ailing Mr. Nas, who has pale, flaky skin, claw-like hands, and a habit of vomiting a black sludge that seems connected to the deaths happening around him. Ben is immediately spooked by Constance, who tells him that all of her children are “alive and thriving,” a line that hints at major changes from the events of past seasons.
Twisty the Clown Returns for a Bloody Massacre
Episode 2 of the premiere delivered one of the most gruesome scenes of the season so far. Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch) from Freak Show returned to the screen and attacked a Los Angeles clown school. After being rejected from joining the class, Twisty took out his knives and killed every clown in the room, bringing the total death count to 13. The scene was framed as a vision or dream connected to Mr. Nas, who threw up more of the black sludge right after it happened, hinting that he is linked to the sinister killings.
Constance Decorates a Black Christmas Tree with Adelaide, Kai, and Tate
The most talked-about moment of the premiere came in the final moments of Episode 2. Constance was seen decorating a black Christmas tree with her daughter Adelaide Langdon (Jamie Brewer) to celebrate Rauhnacht, a special German Christmas tradition that takes place thirteen days after actual Christmas. Rauhnacht is rooted in folklore about the “rough nights” between Christmas and Epiphany, when spirits are said to roam freely.
While Constance decorated the tree, two of Evan Peters’ other characters from past seasons also appeared. Kai Anderson from Cult was helping with the tree, and Tate Langdon, Constance’s dead son from Murder House, was there too, dressed in his iconic rubber suit. Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd) escorted a mysterious figure in a babydoll mask into the gathering. After Constance retired for the night, Tate and the other partygoers prepared to go to a place called Club Hell.
A Portal to Hell Opens on the Thirteenth Floor
Episode 3, titled Rauhnacht, continued the holiday theme and pushed the story toward its darker destination. Constance’s gathering for the German Christmas celebration eventually opened a Portal to Hell. The Apollyon building itself is a major clue, as Ben’s new workplace is located on the entire 13th floor, and Mr. Nas’s apartment is filled with paintings and symbols all connected to the number 13. The season’s main threat appears to be tied to hell itself, with Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson) sensing “something wicked” coming for the witches and the world.
The Cast Brings Back Fan-Favorite Characters from Multiple Seasons
Season 13 features one of the biggest ensemble reunions in the show’s history. Sarah Paulson returns as Cordelia Goode from Coven, alongside Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery. Evan Peters plays multiple characters, including Tate Langdon, James Patrick March from Hotel, and Kai Anderson from Cult. Angela Bassett returns as Marie Laveau, Kathy Bates as Delphine LaLaurie, and Gabourey Sidibe as Queenie. Jessica Lange plays five characters this season: Constance Langdon, Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode, Elsa Mars, and a fifth mystery character.
