South Park returned for its 29th season on September 16, 2026, with a new name and a massive audience. The premiere episode, titled “South American Biker Gangs,” drew 4.2 million viewers across Comedy Central and Paramount+ in the U.S. within its first three days, according to Variety. The show, now officially called South America, also saw a sharp rise in the key 18-49 demographic, scoring a 0.97 rating—a 33% increase from the Season 28 premiere.
Ratings Breakdown: Strong Gains Among Young Adults
The 4.2 million three-day total is nearly even with the previous season’s premiere, which reached 4.3 million viewers. But the real story is in the younger audience numbers. The 0.97 rating among adults 18-49 is up significantly from Season 28’s 0.73. The share also climbed to 4.77, a 20% jump from last year’s 3.96.
Between Monday and Friday of premiere week, the South America episode was the most-watched cable telecast of the week among adults 18-49, excluding sports programming.
Social Media Numbers Show Huge Interest
The name change from South Park to South America drove heavy online conversation. On premiere day, the series ranked as the No. 1 most social cable comedy. Over three days, it generated 11 million views and 1 million engagements. The episode also pulled in 63,000 online mentions—a 40% increase from what the Season 28 premiere achieved in the same window.
Why the Show Changed Its Name
Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the name change in early September 2026, just days after the show won its sixth Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. The new title parodies President Donald Trump’s efforts to rename major U.S. landmarks, including changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America.
“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
A Return to Classic South Park
Critics and fans noted that the premiere shifted focus back to the show’s core characters. The episode centered on Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny dealing with a craze for e-bikes, while Randy Marsh formed a biker gang in protest. IGN called it “a classic-style episode” and “a blast from the past,” noting that Kenny dies for the first time in years.
Fans on social media celebrated the return to form. One viewer wrote, “South Park returned with the focus ON the people of South Park instead of making them background characters in their own show. No cutaways to the White House. No Satan. No Trump. South Park was ABOUT South Park. This is already better than anything from last season!”
The new intro song, re-recorded by Primus, also drew reactions. The lyrics now include the line, “I’m goin’ down to South America, have myself a time!”
