Lena Dunham sits behind a wooden desk with a CEO nameplate in newly released first look images for It Gets Worse, the upcoming Channel 4 comedy produced by A24. The Girls creator guest stars as Greta in the six-part series, which was written, created by, and stars comedian Leo Reich. The images, shared on September 25, 2026, show Dunham in full corporate mode inside an airy office, a sharp contrast to the messy, post-university lives at the heart of the show.
What It Gets Worse Is About
The series follows Ethan (Reich), Abi (Emily Fairn), and Sam (Olive Gray) — three best friends from university who are now dysfunctional flatmates in London. A year after moving to the city, they have accomplished nothing, and their landlord is selling up. They are getting kicked out.
The official synopsis puts it plainly: “Can they keep their friendships alive when they are dispersed across a city that seems to want them dead? Can they find a six out of ten or higher to have bad sex with? Can they get their shit together when the world is so obviously falling apart? Probably not. But they’re going to have fun trying.”
Reich told Vogue UK that his character Ethan is not autobiographical, joking: “He just has my face and my voice and does stuff that I might do. It’s very different. There’s a full separation.” He also admitted he has never actually had flatmates, having lived with his parents until he was 25.
Cast and Guest Stars
Beyond the central trio, the show features a notable lineup of guest actors. Amelia Dimoldenberg plays Emily, Blake Harrison plays Roger, Vicki Pepperdine plays Sarah, and Clayton Pettet (also known as musician Babymorocco) plays Freddy. Andrew Scott appears as a therapist in a scene that has already gone viral.
A trailer released in early September showed Scott’s character telling Reich’s Ethan, “You’re just a hole. You’re just a hole for daddy,” before slapping him and spitting in his mouth. The clip spread quickly online and drew attention to the series ahead of its festival debut.
Novelist Zadie Smith narrates the series. Reich described getting the cast to say yes as “obviously unreal” and added: “It was really nice having actually funny people just being funny. And then I get all the credit. Perfect!”
Release Details for UK, Canada, and Beyond
It Gets Worse premieres at the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 21:00. It will air on Channel 4 in the UK later that month. In Canada, the series streams exclusively on Crave as a Crave Original.
A US streaming platform has not been announced yet. The A24 connection has led to speculation that it could land on HBO Max, but no official confirmation has been made.

Sam Pinnell (Trying, Motherland, Derry Girls) is the producer. Mounia Akl (House of Guinness, The Responder, Boiling Point) directs. Matthew Lewis, an Emmy winner for Adolescence, is the director of photography. Charlie Perkins, Channel 4’s Head of Comedy, commissioned the show and said in a statement: “Leo has this ability to distil the swirling complications and idiosyncrasies of his generation into succinct, spiky and incredibly funny writing and magnetic performances.”
Reich developed the show for nearly four years. His 2022 Edinburgh Fringe show Literally Who Cares?! became an HBO comedy special and caught Dunham’s attention. She later wrote a part for him in her 2025 Netflix series Too Much. That connection led to her guest role in It Gets Worse.
