Thor is picking up his axe and his hardened warrior mindset for Avengers: Doomsday. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed that Chris Hemsworth‘s God of Thunder will return to the version fans saw in Avengers: Infinity War, a fighter who lost everything and seeks meaning through battle.
The confirmation arrives as the film approaches its December 18, 2026 release date. A new trailer has already shown Thor facing off against Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom, with the villain catching Stormbreaker with one hand, a clear callback to Thanos stopping the axe in Infinity War.
What the Russo Brothers Said
Speaking with CBR, Joe Russo explained the approach to Thor’s character. “It’s fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has,” Russo said. “He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That’s what we’re going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor.”
Russo also described the emotional state of Thor in the film. “We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle. Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he’s ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
Anthony Russo added praise for Hemsworth’s performance in Avengers: Endgame, where Thor was shown as overweight and traumatized. “It was watching him do that dance emotionally, and so bravely, and in a suit that weighed 70 pounds to give him that weight.”
Why Infinity War Thor Matters
Thor’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen wild shifts in tone. Kenneth Branagh’s original Thor had a Shakespearean feel. Taika Waititi brought comedy to Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, with mixed reactions from fans. The Russo Brothers took a more serious route in Infinity War and Endgame.
Infinity War Thor is defined by loss. At the start of that film, Thor watches Thanos kill his brother Loki and his best friend Heimdall. Left for dead, he travels to Nidavellir with Rocket and Groot to forge Stormbreaker. He nearly dies creating the weapon. He comes close to killing Thanos with it, but the blow is not enough.
That version of Thor is driven, serious, and battle-hardened. The Russo Brothers are bringing that energy back for Doomsday.
Thor’s Story Between Endgame and Doomsday
After Endgame, Thor traveled with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor: Love and Thunder showed him adopting Love, the daughter of Gorr the God Butcher. Love is played by Hemsworth’s real-life daughter, India Rose Hemsworth. The two have been traveling the universe together.
Teasers for Doomsday show Thor praying to his father, Odin, for strength. He speaks about his adopted daughter. “Father,” he says. “All my life, I have answered every call: to honour, duty, to war. But now, fate has given me something I’ve never sought… a child. A life untouched by the storm.” He asks for the strength of the All-Fathers so he can fight once more and return home to her, “not as a warrior, but as warmth.”
Love is confirmed to appear in the film. Chris Hemsworth has spoken about working with his daughter on set. “She’s now 13, so she’s a teenager, so a bit different to when we shot the other one,” he said on The View. “And she walks on set and she’s like, ‘Ugh, how long is this gonna take?’ I was like, ‘We haven’t even started!’”
The Fight with Doctor Doom
The central conflict of Doomsday pits Thor against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Doom is presented as a threat greater than Thanos. The trailer shows Thor confronting Doom and warning him, “You’ll beg for hell long before I grant it.” Doom responds, “Hell answers to me. For I am Doom.” He then stops Thor’s Stormbreaker attack with one hand and blasts him back.
The moment mirrors the Infinity War scene where Thor fails to stop Thanos with Stormbreaker. Doom’s ability to halt the weapon so easily shows his power. Stormbreaker was created to kill Thanos. Thor has used it against gods, aliens, and armies. Doom stops it without trouble.
Release Dates and Global Availability
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18, 2026 in the United States, Canada, and India. The film will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu in India. The United Kingdom gets the film earlier, on December 16, 2026. Other international markets, including Australia, will see the film on December 17.
The runtime is 165 minutes, or 2 hours and 45 minutes. That makes it longer than Infinity War at 149 minutes but shorter than Endgame at 181 minutes.
