What Black Clover Is About
Black Clover is set in a world where magic is everything, and social status is determined by magical power. The story follows Asta, a boy born without any magic at all, and his childhood rival Yuno, a prodigy with immense magical talent. Both were abandoned at the same church in Hage Village and grew up as brothers, sharing one dream: to become the Wizard King, the highest magical rank in the Clover Kingdom.
Here is a simple breakdown of the story’s core elements:
- Asta: Born with zero magic but received a rare five-leaf clover grimoire containing Anti-Magic powers. He joined the Black Bulls, the worst-ranked Magic Knights squad, and worked harder than anyone to overcome his limits.
- Yuno: Born with extraordinary magical power and a four-leaf clover grimoire. He joined the Golden Dawn, the top-ranked squad, and became its vice-captain before the Spade Kingdom arc.
- The Clover Kingdom: Home to the Magic Knights, nine squads of mages who protect the realm.
- The Spade Kingdom: A hostile nation ruled by the Dark Triad, three siblings who made contracts with supreme devils.
- Devils: Powerful beings from the underworld. Asta’s Anti-Magic Devil, Liebe, is sealed inside his grimoire and later becomes his partner.
The original anime ran for 170 episodes from October 2017 to March 2021, produced by Studio Pierrot. It covered the story from Asta’s childhood through the early stages of the Spade Kingdom conflict. The manga by Yuki Tabata concluded in May 2026 in Jump Giga.

Black Clover Episode 170 Recap: Every Character’s Progress Before the Break
The original anime’s final episode, “The Faraway Future,” aired on March 30, 2021. It delivered major reveals about Asta’s devil and set up the conflicts that Season 2 now continues.
Asta and Liebe’s Devil-Binding Ritual
Nacht Faust, the Black Bulls’ vice-captain, used a forbidden spell to force the devil inside Asta’s grimoire to appear physically. The ritual demanded that Asta defeat the devil and force him into submission to master his devil powers.
Liebe took control of all three swords inside the grimoire. Asta was left fighting with only one arm and the katana that Yami Sukehiro had lent him during the fight against Dante. Using techniques he learned from Yami, Patry, and other opponents, Asta defeated Liebe.
Asta refused to make Liebe a slave. He extended his hand and offered an equal contract called a “Devil-Befriending Contract.” Liebe agreed, and their partnership was formed on equal terms.

Liebe’s Past and Asta’s Mother
The episode revealed Liebe’s origin. He was born without magic, just like Asta, and was mistreated by other devils. He was thrown through the gate to the human world, where Licita found him. Licita’s magic drained the life and magic of others, which is why she left baby Asta at the church to protect him. She named Liebe and raised him like a son.
Lucifero, one of the highest-ranking devils, tried to possess Liebe’s body to enter the human world. Licita sacrificed her life to protect Liebe and sealed him into the five-leaf clover grimoire. Liebe swore to destroy all devils. The grimoire eventually chose Asta.
Yuno, Noelle, and the Other Magic Knights
Yuno had become the acting captain of the Golden Dawn after William Vangeance was captured by Zenon. Noelle woke up near the elves’ tribe after the battle in the Heart Kingdom. The episode showed Yuno, Noelle, and the other Magic Knights determined to grow stronger for a rematch against the Dark Triad.
Yuno specifically planned to train with Langris Vaude to prepare for a rematch against Zenon, the Dark Disciple who defeated him and took Vangeance.
Nacht Faust’s Role
Nacht Faust, the Black Bulls’ vice-captain, revealed himself as a devil host with four devils under his command. He took Asta to a secret chamber and initiated the Devil-Binding Ritual. After Asta completed it, Nacht agreed to train him to master Devil Union.
