Tracker Season 3 closed the biggest chapter of Colter Shaw’s story while opening a new one that could change everything. The CBS drama wrapped its third season on May 24, 2026, with a two-part finale that finally answered the question of what happened to Colter’s father, but ended with his brother Russell making a choice that tore the family apart again. Season 4 premieres on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 9:30 PM ET on CBS, and there are several key details viewers need to remember before Colter returns.

The Chrono Stasis Project and Ashton Shaws Secret Work

The central mystery of Season 3 was the truth about Ashton Shaw, Colter and Russell’s late father. For years, Colter believed his father was a paranoid man who went off the grid for no good reason. Season 3 revealed that Ashton was actually working with a covert government program called Chrono Stasis, a DARPA-funded operation that ran cognitive experiments on gifted children to use their abilities for military purposes.

Ashton worked with Dr. Serena Jukic and others on the project. When he realized the program was shifting toward exploiting children as weapons, he pushed back against it. That decision led to him being discredited and forced his family to live off the grid. Ashton’s paranoia was not a symptom of mental illness, but a reasonable response to a real threat. He was right to be afraid. The people behind Chrono Stasis were willing to do whatever it took to keep the program running, including eliminating anyone who threatened to expose it.

Dr. Jukic, played by Jeri Ryan, returned in the finale. She had grown close to one of the test subjects, a boy named Danny Kellerman (Reid Miller), and helped Colter and Russell locate him. Danny had been taken to a facility called the Quiet Place as punishment. The finale also introduced Lola, a teenage girl with precognition, the ability to see events before they happen. Lola was being held at a power plant about 100 miles away. Russell told Colter that the government had been trying to crack precognition “for decades,” which explained why the experiments were so cruel and why the program refused to stop.

The Two-Part Finale and Danny and Lolas Rescue

The Season 3 finale, titled “The Best Ones,” served as the second half of a two-part story. The episode picked up in the lab where children were being experimented on. Colter learned that Danny had pressed a button and refused to leave because he needed to help Lola. Russell barged in and together he and Colter fought through armed guards to rescue Danny.

Danny helped the brothers by doing a remote viewing session guided by Dr. Jukic. He located Lola at a power plant about 100 miles away. Colter headed there to rescue her, while Russell split off to meet a military source. The source admitted he had been forced to sell Russell out. Armed guards ambushed Russell and shot him. He survived with a bullet wound but kept it hidden from Colter.

Colter managed to free Lola from the power plant. He also faced a new threat: Vickers, a former Delta Force operative now working as a hitman for the organization behind Chrono Stasis. Using Lola’s precognition, Colter and Lola were able to find Russell, patch him up, and hide before Vickers and his crew arrived. After another shootout, Colter and Russell prevailed. Colter arranged for Lola, Danny, and Dr. Jukic to disappear into the underground network run by his old contact Barbie, giving the survivors new lives off the grid.

“I don’t know if it’s a complete resolve, like ‘Everything’s okay, and now I feel better,’ but it’s information that he needed in order for him to move on with his life and go about his business and put that to bed, or at least be at peace with the details, knowing that he has the details, because for so long, he just didn’t have the details.” — Justin Hartley told Deadline about the finale’s revelations.

Russells Betrayal and the File About Colters Past

The biggest shock of the finale came after the rescue mission was complete. Russell confronted McIntyre (Glenn Morshower), the man running the Chrono Stasis program. Russell originally intended to kill McIntyre to ensure there were no loose ends. McIntyre instead handed Russell a classified file. The file contained disturbing claims about something Ashton Shaw may have done to Colter when he was a child.

McIntyre offered Russell a deal. He could take the file and keep its contents buried, protecting Colter from whatever psychological damage the truth might cause. In exchange, Russell had to walk away from his brother and complete one last job for the shadow organization. Russell agreed. He asked Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene) to keep Colter off his trail and promised he would explain everything when he could.

Russell’s decision came from a place of love. He wanted to protect his younger brother from a painful truth. But lying to Colter after everything the Shaw family had been through was the wrong way to handle it. The brothers had spent years rebuilding their relationship. Russell’s betrayal brought them right back to the secrecy and mistrust that had nearly destroyed their family in the first place.

“Regardless of what is actually on the secret file, he should have trusted that his brother is mature enough to properly process it with his support.” — ScreenRant noted in its analysis of the finale.

Jensen Ackles will return as Russell Shaw in Season 4, but his character is now on a separate mission. The show will likely feature split action as Russell works for McIntyre while Colter continues his reward-seeking cases. At some point, the truth about the file will come out, and the brothers will have to face it together.

Bobby Exley and Velma Bruins Exits Explained

Season 3 was the first season without two original cast members. Eric Graise, who played tech expert Bobby Exley, and Abby McEnany, who played handler Velma Bruin, did not return. The show addressed their absences in the Season 3 premiere.

Chris Lee returned as Randy, Bobby’s cousin, who had already been filling in during Season 2. Randy explained that Bobby had taken a new job as an encryption specialist at a startup. Randy said his cousin was “bringing home the bacon” with his salary and stock options. The explanation gave viewers closure on Bobby’s character.

Reenie explained that Velma had left the practice to save her marriage with Teddi Bruin (Robin Weigert), who had departed after Season 1. Reenie made it clear that Velma’s choice was not something she took lightly. The door was left open for Velma’s possible return, but she has not come back.

New Faces in Colters World

Cassady McClincy Zhang joined Season 3 as Mel Day, a new hire at Reenie’s law office. Mel started as a recurring guest star but has been upgraded to a series regular for Season 4. Her expanded role suggests she will be more involved in Colter’s cases and the office dynamics in Denver.

Kathleen Robertson appeared in Season 3 as Maxine, a legal powerhouse who got involved in a messy lawsuit case with Reenie. The storyline ended in a way that felt anticlimactic to some viewers. Reenie also continued to struggle with the trauma of her abduction at the end of Season 2, though she refused to face it head-on.

Randy has become a full-time member of Colter’s team, based out of Reenie’s law office in Denver. His position in Colorado allows him to crossover with both Colter-centered and Reenie-focused plotlines. This centralized the cast in a way that Bobby’s Chicago base did not allow.
