Gillian Anderson has revealed that the ending of her new Netflix thriller Animals was almost much more ambiguous about whether her character survives. The film, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, arrived on Netflix on October 9, 2026, and has already sparked plenty of conversation about its dark final act.

In Animals, Anderson plays Dayle Burton, a mysterious fixer who steps in to help a Los Angeles mayoral candidate when his son is kidnapped. The film builds toward a violent standoff where Dayle is shot and left dying. But according to Anderson, there was a version of the story where audiences would not have known for sure if Dayle lived or died.

What Happens to Dayle in the Animals Ending

The final act of Animals takes place near the Los Angeles River. Mark Kimball, played by Affleck, has turned to Dayle for help after his son is taken. Dayle brings in an associate named Rand to handle the kidnappers.

In the shootout that follows, Rand kills two of the kidnappers. A third kidnapper then appears and shoots both Rand and Dayle. Rand dies instantly. Dayle is left badly wounded and bleeding on the ground. Mark walks over to her, takes her phone, which contains recordings of their deal, and leaves her there without calling for help. The film strongly suggests that Dayle dies from her injuries.

The scene is cold and deliberate. Mark, who has spent the movie presenting himself as a clean politician, chooses to protect his campaign and his secrets over saving the woman who helped him.

Gillian Anderson Confirms Talks About a Different Ending

In an interview with ScreenRant, Anderson said she and Affleck discussed whether Dayle should survive. She confirmed that they “did have those conversations.” Anderson went on to say there “might have been a version where it was more elusive as to whether she survives at the end or not.”

“We did have those conversations. There might have been a version where it was more elusive as to whether she survives at the end or not.”

The actress did not say whether an alternate cut of the film exists. Her comments only confirm that the idea was discussed during production.

Anderson also spoke about how Dayle’s fate connects to the character’s personality. In a separate interview shared by Netflix, she said Dayle’s death is tied to her “hubris” and her belief that she is always right. That pride leads her to underestimate the danger of the situation.

The final version of the film leaves little doubt that Dayle dies. Mark’s decision to take her phone and walk away makes his moral collapse complete. An ending where Dayle’s survival was unclear would have changed how viewers judge Mark’s final choice.

Why the Ending Works the Way It Does

Dayle’s death serves a clear purpose in the story. Throughout Animals, Mark insists he is different from other politicians. He says he will not make corrupt deals to win. When his son is kidnapped, he breaks that promise by asking Dayle and Rand to kill the kidnappers.

By letting Dayle die and taking her phone, Mark hides the evidence of what he ordered. He then goes on to claim credit for stopping the kidnappers. The ending shows that Mark has become exactly the kind of politician he said he would never be.

If Dayle had survived, she would have remained a witness to Mark’s crime. That would have created a different kind of threat for him. An ambiguous ending would have left viewers wondering whether Mark would eventually be exposed. The final film instead delivers a definitive answer about who Mark really is.

What Critics Are Saying About Animals

Critics have had a mixed response to Animals. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a critics’ score in the low 40s and an audience score in the 40s as well. Some reviewers praised the performances and the tense atmosphere. Others felt the story was uneven.

The Hollywood Reporter called it a thriller “full of juicy elements that should be a lot tastier.” SlashFilm said the film “fails to find the tension in an intense situation.” Vulture was far harsher, calling it a “catastrophe.”

Gillian Anderson’s performance has been one of the more consistent points of praise. Her portrayal of Dayle as a calm, calculating presence in the middle of chaos has been noted by several reviewers. The character’s cold pragmatism stands out against the emotional performances from Affleck and Washington.

Anderson said she had never played a character as “impassive and impenetrable” as Dayle. She described the role as a challenge because Dayle keeps her feelings hidden while everyone around her is falling apart.
