Michael B. Jordan walked on stage at Amazon’s upfront presentation in New York on May 11, 2026, and made a announcement that Fourth Wing fans had been waiting nearly three years to hear. Prime Video has officially ordered the fantasy series to production, with Jordan serving as an executive producer through his company Outlier Society. The show is based on Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling Empyrean novels, a series that has sold millions of copies worldwide and built one of the most passionate fan communities on BookTok.

What makes this project stand out from other fantasy adaptations is the sheer number of dragons in its source material. While Game of Thrones featured only three dragons across its entire eight-season run, the world of Fourth Wing contains hundreds of them, with close to 100 dragons appearing at the Basgiath War College alone during the annual Threshing ceremony. This scale presents both an exciting opportunity and a massive production challenge for Prime Video.

The Creative Team Behind the Series

The production brings together an impressive lineup of talent. Lisa Joy, co-creator of HBO’s Westworld, will direct the pilot episode. Meredith Averill, known for her work on The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key, serves as showrunner and wrote the adaptation. Rebecca Yarros herself is directly involved as an executive producer, giving fans confidence that the series will stay true to the books they love.

At the upfront event, Lisa Joy shared her vision for the project.

“We’re building a cinematic world,” she said, with the goal “to deliver the series this fandom deserves.”

Rebecca Yarros also expressed her enthusiasm for the team assembled behind the adaptation.

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” Yarros said.

Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, described the book series as a global phenomenon.

“Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story,” Friedlander said.

A Long Journey to the Screen

The road to this series order was not a quick one. Amazon MGM Studios optioned the rights to Fourth Wing in 2023, shortly after the book became a viral sensation on TikTok. The novel spent 25 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and accumulated over 1 billion views across related hashtags on the platform.

The project went through several creative changes during development. Moira Walley-Beckett, known for Breaking Bad, was originally brought on as showrunner but left the project. Meredith Averill joined in September 2025 and has been confirmed as the writer and executive producer leading the series.

What the Story Is About

Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, a twenty-year-old who is forced by her mother, a general in Navarre’s military, to enter the brutal Basgiath War College. Instead of pursuing a quiet life among scholars, Violet must compete to become one of the elite dragon riders, a path where failure often means death.

The book series, known as The Empyrean, has a five-book arc planned. The first book arrived in May 2023, followed by Iron Flame in November 2023, and the third installment, Onyx Storm, was released on January 21, 2025.

A Different Kind of Dragon Story

Fans of fantasy television will notice a major difference between Fourth Wing and other dragon-focused shows. In Game of Thrones, dragons were rare and mythical creatures, with only three remaining by the time the main story takes place. The show treated them as solitary, wild beasts.

Fourth Wing presents a completely different approach. The dragons in Yarros’ world have their own organized society called The Empyrean, with distinct breeds and dens. They are highly intelligent, can communicate telepathically with their human riders, and share unique magical abilities called signets with their bonded partners.

The scale of dragon involvement means the series will require a significant CGI budget. Unlike Game of Thrones, where dragons appeared sparingly, Fourth Wing revolves around them and requires their constant presence on screen.

Casting and Release Information

Prime Video has not yet announced a release date or confirmed any cast members for the series. Rebecca Yarros previously stated that casting had not begun as of early 2026.

Several actors have been mentioned by fans as possible choices for the lead roles. Inde Navarrette, known for her work in Obsession, has publicly expressed interest in playing Violet Sorrengail. The actress, who is five feet tall, matches the petite build described in the books.

“I have seen this because I’m a really big fan of Fourth Wing, and I would love to play Violet,” Navarrette said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “But, I mean, at the end of the day, I really want the studio to find what everybody thinks is like the perfect role.”

Michael B. Jordan recently followed Navarrette on Instagram, which some fans see as a possible sign of interest. Other names circulating in fan discussions include Josh Heuston and Emilio Sakraya for the role of Xaden Riorson.

The series will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide when it eventually premieres. Production timelines for large-scale fantasy shows typically span well over a year, especially for projects requiring extensive visual effects work.

What Fans Are Saying

Social media reactions have been a mix of excitement and caution. Many fans are thrilled that the adaptation is finally moving forward after years of uncertainty. At the same time, some are worried about whether Prime Video will invest enough in the visual effects to do the hundreds of dragons justice.

“AMAZON DO NOT FAIL ME PLS #fourthwing #fourthwingrebeccayarros,” one fan posted on social media.

Other fans have expressed a desire for the adaptation to remain faithful to the source material, with one comment noting a preference to “make it an animated adaptation and not live action” to better capture the fantasy elements of the books.

“Fans are excited but cautious, with many comparing the pressure to ‘Lord of the Rings’ and hoping Amazon has the budget to do the dragons right,” one social media post summarized.

The #FourthWing hashtag continues to trend on TikTok and other platforms, with readers sharing casting ideas, fan art, and theories about how the show will handle key moments from the books.
