Anna Torv is returning to the world of crime drama, and this time she is heading into the heat of Australia’s Gold Coast. Apple TV has officially acquired Dustfall, a gripping six-episode crime drama that reunites viewers with the Mindhunter alum in a story that trades the cold interrogation rooms of the FBI for the humid, morally complex landscape of tropical Australia.
The series is being described by Apple as a “propulsive, atmospheric tropic noir,” a label that points to a fresh blend of sun-drenched settings and dark psychological storytelling. For viewers who have been searching for something to fill the void left by Mindhunter since its quiet end on Netflix, Dustfall arrives with a very different flavor but a similarly heavy emotional weight.
What Dustfall Is About
Dustfall follows Antigone “Tig” Pollard, played by Anna Torv, a seasoned detective whose strong sense of justice is tested by a world where victims are doubted, predators hide in plain sight, and the legal system often falls short. The story pulls Tig back to her hometown of North Gap after years working in the city.
She is called in to investigate a harrowing sexual assault case that takes an even darker turn when a key suspect is found dead. As Tig hunts for the truth, she is forced to confront long-buried secrets from her own adolescence, tying her personal history directly to the case she is trying to solve.
The series is based on the award-winning novel The Unbelieved by Vikki Petraitis, which won the inaugural A&U Crime Prize and the Davitt Awards Readers’ Choice award. The screen adaptation is written by Dianne Taylor, known for her work on After the Party, and directed by Emma Freeman, who previously collaborated with Torv on The Newsreader.
The Cast Joining Anna Torv
Torv leads an impressive ensemble cast that brings together talent from Australia and the UK. Juliet Stevenson, a BAFTA and Emmy nominee known for Truly, Madly, Deeply, plays Olivia, the mother of Detective Tig Pollard. The cast also includes Peter Fenton, Bert LaBonté, Zoe Phillips, Kate Box, Lila McGuire, Harry Gilchrist, Ling Cooper Tang, Gemma Chua-Tran, Alice Ansara, Martin Sacks, Theo Haitana, Conrad Coleby, Ben Knight, Kirsty O’Connor, Jay Ryan, Ed Wightman, and Luke J. Morgan.
The series is a co-production between Soapbox Pictures and Moonriver Television for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), in association with the BBC, ZDF, and Screen Australia. It was filmed on location in and around the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.
What Makes Tropic Noir Different
The term “tropic noir” is not just a marketing label. It describes a specific storytelling approach that sets Dustfall apart from the typical detective drama. Traditional noir stories are often set in rainy, shadowy cities where danger lurks in alleyways and dimly lit bars. Tropic noir flips that visual language on its head.
The setting is bright, humid, and sun-soaked, but the darkness comes from the social fabric of the community rather than the weather. The Guardian’s review of Dustfall noted that the series is “less interested in the mechanics of a sexual assault than the social conditions that surround it.” This focus on community attitudes, victim skepticism, and the gap between justice and the legal system is what gives the show its weight.
The Brisbane Times review described it as “a nuanced drama – the best I have seen this year – that doesn’t flinch from the aftermath of sexual assault, but also layers in all the ways” a community can fail the people who need protection most. The review also praised it as “one of the ABC’s finest” productions, awarding it five stars.
How Dustfall Compares to Mindhunter
Mindhunter built its reputation on slow-burn tension, outstanding acting, and a focus on the psychology of criminals rather than the violence they committed. Dustfall shares that interest in the minds behind the crime, but it shifts the focus from the killers to the systems that let them operate.
Both shows center on investigators who are deeply changed by the work they do. In Mindhunter, Holden Ford and Bill Tench sit across from serial killers to understand what makes them tick. In Dustfall, Tig Pollard is not just solving a case. She is confronting the same community that raised her and asking why it failed to protect a young woman.
The emotional pull of Dustfall comes from the fact that Tig’s investigation is personal. The Guardian review noted that the show has “an emotional pull not commonly found in detective dramas,” and that Torv delivers “another very strong and persuasive performance.”
When and Where to Watch Dustfall
Dustfall premiered in Australia on ABC TV and ABC iview on Sunday, 11 October 2026 at 8:20 PM. All six episodes are available to stream on ABC iview from that date.
For audiences outside Australia, Apple TV will premiere the series in 2027. An exact release date has not yet been announced. Viewers in the UK can expect the series on the BBC, as the broadcaster has acquired rights for its territories. ZDF holds premiere rights in Germany.
Apple TV acquired the series from distributor Federation International. The acquisition is notable because Apple TV, which is known primarily for its original productions, has only recently begun buying completed international shows outright, following its acquisition of the BBC comedy Small Prophets in September 2026.

Early Reviews and Critical Response
Television critics in Australia have responded to Dustfall with strong praise. The Brisbane Times called it “one of the ABC’s finest” and gave it five stars, noting that it “doesn’t flinch from the aftermath of sexual assault.” The Guardian described it as “rock-solid, socially conscientious drama, imbued with weight and thought.”
The series also received recognition on the festival circuit before its broadcast premiere. Dustfall had its world premiere at Series Mania in France in March 2026, where it won the Audience Award. Screen Queensland confirmed that production on the Gold Coast wrapped in 2025, with Torv and director Emma Freeman both returning to their home state for the project.
ABC Head of Scripted Rachel Okine said in a statement: “We are delighted to bring this remarkable series to our ABC audience. In the trusted hands of this powerhouse creative team, Dustfall looks set to be the watercooler drama of 2026.”
