Alden Ehrenreich has signed on to star alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming film Miami Vice ‘85. The movie, which is a new take on the classic 1980s television series, is being produced by Universal Pictures. The casting news comes just months after Ehrenreich won his first Tony Award for his Broadway performance.
Ehrenreich Joins Star-Studded Cast
The Solo: A Star Wars Story actor is the latest addition to the movie’s growing cast. He will appear with Michael B. Jordan, who plays Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, and Austin Butler, who takes on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett.
Sources close to the project say Ehrenreich had multiple offers on the table. Reports indicate he received upwards of eight different opportunities after his Tony win. However, he could not resist the chance to work with Jordan and Butler in Kosinski’s film.
His exact role in the movie is being kept secret for now. The studio has not shared any details about which character he will play.
The Film’s Setting and Story
Miami Vice ‘85 takes viewers back to the mid-1980s. The movie explores the glamour and corruption of Miami during that time period.
The story is inspired by the pilot episode of the original television series. That episode first aired in 1984 and showed the beginning of the partnership between Crockett and Tubbs. The two undercover detectives worked together to take on drug lords and criminals on the streets of Miami Beach.
Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing the film. He plans to shoot the movie with IMAX cameras, similar to his previous blockbusters.
Dan Gilroy, who wrote Nightcrawler, has written the script. The screenplay is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who also created the original TV series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay.
Production and Release Plans
Production for Miami Vice ‘85 is scheduled to begin later this year.
The movie will be released exclusively in theaters. Universal Pictures has set the release date for May 19, 2028.
The film will be produced by Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions, along with Kosinski. Clark recently produced The Batman and The Penguin.
Sara Scott, the Executive Vice President of Production Development, and Christina Hoffrogge, a Creative Executive of Production Development, will oversee the project for the studio.
Other Cast Members
The cast for Miami Vice ‘85 already includes several other well-known actors. Danai Gurira, who starred with Jordan in Black Panther, is part of the ensemble. Aubrey Plaza, Ruth Negga, Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Pilou Asbæk, Aiysha Hart, and Paapa Essiedu have also joined the project.
Ehrenreich’s Recent Success
Alden Ehrenreich has been busy with several high-profile projects. He won his first Tony Award in June 2026 for his role in the play Becky Shaw. His performance received widespread praise from critics.
He recently appeared in Zach Cregger’s horror film Weapons and played a role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Ehrenreich will next be seen opposite Helen Mirren in Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder. That movie will have its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. He will also star opposite Daisy Ridley in The Last Resort, which is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2027.
