Outlander: Blood of My Blood is carrying the legacy of the original series forward in ways that longtime viewers are noticing. Season 2, which premiered on Friday, September 18, 2026, on Starz, has already brought back two characters that fans of the flagship show will recognize immediately. The prequel continues to weave the past and present of the Outlander universe together, and the second season is doing it with more purpose than ever.
Legacy Characters Return in Season 2 Premiere
The Season 2 premiere episode, titled “Remembrance Day,” introduced younger versions of Reverend Reginald Wakefield and his housekeeper Mrs. Graham. Both characters appeared in the first season of the original Outlander series in the 1940s timeline. In Blood of My Blood, they appear in the 1920s timeline where Henry Beauchamp is trapped in an insane asylum in Inverness.
Executive producer Maril Davis explained that bringing these characters into the prequel felt natural.
“Their story fit organically into the Henry story in a way,” she said. “Obviously, when we see them in Outlander or the Mothership, they’re older characters, so it naturally, age-wise, fit. And it was such a natural progression to have Henry interact with both of them, and it worked out so well.”
Tom Ashley plays the younger Reverend Wakefield, while Emma Hartley-Miller plays Mrs. Graham. The premiere ends with Mrs. Graham telling Henry that she believes he came through time via the stones.
Fan reactions to the returns were immediate. One viewer commented, “Wow, they have brought Rev Wakefield into the show,” while another wrote, “As soon as they mentioned a chaplain visiting, I was like ohhhhh it HAS to be Wakefield”.
Jamie and Claire’s Parents Face the Jacobite Rising
Season 2 picks up right where Season 1 ended. The two couples—Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Julia Beauchamp (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine)—are separated once again as the Scottish Highlands are split by the 1715 Jacobite Rising.
Brian and his cousin Murtagh return to Castle Leathers to fight alongside his father, Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat (Tony Curran). Ellen goes back to Castle Leoch, where her brothers Colum (Séamus McLean Ross) and Dougal (Sam Retford) are at odds over how to respond to the rebellion.
Jamie Roy, who plays Brian Fraser, said Season 2 will deepen the connection to the original series.
“The first season had a lot of easter eggs and familiar elements, recognizable characters and all that, which I’m sure fans of the original series appreciated,” he said. “And season two won’t be any different in that regard. We’ll see legacy characters returning, as well as new characters who may already have been mentioned in the books being introduced.”
Harriet Slater, who plays Ellen MacKenzie, added that Ellen finds her fighting spirit this season. She returns to Castle Leoch and devises a plan to protect Clan MacKenzie from the Crown, no matter the outcome.
Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser Gets a New Love Story
Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, played by Rory Alexander, was a fan-favorite in the original Outlander series. In Blood of My Blood Season 2, he gets his own romantic arc. Episode 2 introduced Grace (Ruby Fubara), a maidservant who catches Murtagh’s eye.
The situation is complicated because Grace works for Jocasta Cameron (Sadhbh Malin), with whom Murtagh shared a romantic encounter in Season 1. Executive producer Matthew B. Roberts confirmed they are setting up a love story for Murtagh.
The cast teased the new love interest on social media before the premiere. Harriet Slater passed the phone to someone “who has a new love interest in this series,” and Rory Alexander appeared on screen with a clip of his character gifting a flower to someone. Fans responded with excitement, with one writing, “Murtagh and a new love interest. T-minus 2 days”.

Streaming Success and Critical Reception
The second season is performing strongly on streaming platforms. According to FlixPatrol, Outlander: Blood of My Blood is the No. 1 most-watched show in the United States on Starz. On Starz through Prime Video, it is No. 1 in Canada and No. 2 in the United States. The series is also trending worldwide, and on MGM+, it is the No. 1 show in the UK.
Reviews have been mixed but largely positive. RogerEbert.com praised the season, noting that it “doubles down on much of what made the show’s first outing so appealing, adding even more passion and full-throated feeling to its story of rebellion and complex family dynamics”. ScreenRant offered a more critical view, stating that while the aesthetic is “absolutely perfect,” the actual substance of the story is “a bit lacking”.
Julia and Henry’s Separation from Claire
A central emotional thread in Season 2 is Julia and Henry’s separation from their young daughter, Claire. The trailers briefly referenced how the couple is separated from their 5-year-old daughter, who grows up to become the Claire Fraser played by Caitríona Balfe in the original series.
Hermione Corfield, who plays Julia, spoke about the emotional weight of this separation.
“The separation from Claire gets even worse because I think, in season one, she’s got real hope that they’re going to be able to work it out and get back to the stones, and it will be simple, and they’ll be home in no time,” she said. “I think once those hopes were dashed, the reality that she may never see her daughter again kicks in… that breaks her heart.”
Executive producer Matthew B. Roberts added that this separation is “integral to the story” of Julia and Henry.
Outlander Universe Continues to Expand
Outlander: Blood of My Blood was renewed for a second season before the first season even premiered, showing strong confidence from Starz. The prequel expands the universe created by Diana Gabaldon by exploring the love stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents.
Harriet Slater said the second season has “life and death but on an even bigger scale” compared to the first season. The show continues to blend historical events with the franchise’s signature time-travel mythology, and the 1715 Jacobite Rising provides a dramatic backdrop for the season’s events.
