What Happened at the End of Season 2

Season 2 wrapped up with a death that changed everything. President William Rayburn (Michael McKean) died after learning from Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) that Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) had ties to the bombing of the HMS Courageous. Grace was sworn in as president moments later, and Kate and Hal found themselves working for a leader they knew was hiding a dangerous secret.

The Vice President Twist That Shocked Everyone

Season 3 picked up right at that moment. Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) believed she was next in line for the vice presidency. Instead, President Penn chose Hal, Kate’s husband, as her second in command.

The decision turned Kate and Hal’s marriage upside down. Kate stayed in London as U.S. ambassador to the U.K., while Hal moved to Washington as vice president. The two lived separately for most of the season, pretending to be a happy couple in public while their relationship fell apart behind closed doors.

Creator Debora Cahn described the season as “the split.” She told Netflix’s Tudum, “It’s the time when Kate and Hal’s relationship really falls apart. It’s the time when the U.S.-U.K. relationship really falls apart.”

The Poseidon Nuclear Weapon Crisis

The biggest threat of Season 3 was a Russian submarine carrying a weapon called the Poseidon. This underwater drone carried a nuclear warhead designed to spread radioactive fallout over a massive area. The submarine sank about 12 miles off the coast of England.

The United States offered to help recover the weapon, but U.K. Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) did not trust the Americans. He considered asking China for help instead.

Kate’s brief romantic connection with Callum Ellis (Aidan Turner), a British intelligence officer, gave her key information about the submarine’s location and Russia’s involvement.

Hal and Grace Secret Plan

The season ended with a bilateral summit at Chequers, the U.K. prime minister’s country residence. Kate worked out a deal: the submarine and the Poseidon would be buried in concrete on the ocean floor, keeping the weapon out of everyone’s hands. Trowbridge agreed.

But the plan fell apart in the final moments. Kate discovered that the Poseidon was gone. She realized Hal and Grace had secretly retrieved the weapon for the United States and left Trowbridge to bury an empty submarine.

The realization hit Kate hard. She asked Hal directly, “Did you take it?”

Debora Cahn explained the choice to end the season this way. “It felt important to look at problems that were not just creating individual struggle for our characters but also creating national, global struggle,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
