Chicago P.D. returned on October 21, 2026, with an episode that finally put FBI Agent Charlie Boyden (played by Kyle Selig) right in the middle of the action. Titled “Under the Surface,” the hour followed Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) as he tried to figure out whether the new federal auditor was a threat or just a nuisance, all while a disturbing murder case landed on the Intelligence Unit’s desk.
The episode opened with Boyden pressing Voight about missing files from an old drug case involving a dealer named Arturo Dominguez. Voight brushed it off as misplaced paperwork, but the tension was clear. He did not like someone going through his old cases, and he wasted no time calling Trudy Platt to ask her to dig into Boyden’s background.
A Tip From an Old Informant Leads to a Gruesome Discovery
Before Voight could get too deep into his Boyden problem, a former criminal informant named LaSean Hutchens reached out with a tip. LaSean told him to check the water near an inlet, and divers pulled up several bags containing the dismembered remains of a woman. The head was missing at first, which made it impossible to identify her right away.
The case hit closer to home when a group of mothers showed up at the morgue, hoping the body was not one of their missing daughters. The victim was eventually identified as Kendra Simmons after Ruzek and Voight found the missing head in the water. Evidence pointed toward a man known as B-Rock, who had a reputation for targeting teenage girls.
The Case Forces Voight to Accept Boyden’s Help
The investigation ran into a wall when the unit’s funds were frozen. Voight needed money to pay B-Rock’s driver, Tia, who offered to give up information in exchange for cash to leave Chicago. Boyden said he could not unfreeze the funds, but he offered to get the money from a private donor instead.
Voight refused at first. Donor money always comes with strings attached, and he did not want to owe Boyden anything. Trudy’s background check on Boyden came back clean, which only made things more confusing. With no other option, Voight went back to Boyden and agreed to the deal. The price? The missing files from the Dominguez case that Boyden had asked about at the start of the episode.
“What do you want?” Voight asked Charlie.
“Your trust,” Charlie replied.
Voight made it clear that his trust is not easy to earn.
B-Rock’s Fate and a Shocking Death
With the donor money in hand, Tia gave up the full story. She told Voight and Burgess that B-Rock had confessed to killing Kendra and cutting up her body in his basement. The team searched his place, but the first pass came up empty. A lead from Kendra’s mother eventually took Voight and Imani to a vacant building, where they found hair with blood on it in a basement drain.
When Voight cornered B-Rock, the suspect pulled a gun. Voight shot and killed him at the scene. The case appeared to be closed, but the final moments of the episode set up a bigger mystery.
LaSean, the former informant who started the whole case, was found dead. The episode ended with Voight and the team facing the reality that the tip that led them to Kendra may have been part of something larger, and Boyden now holds leverage over Voight with the missing files.
