Chicago Fire returned with Season 15, Episode 3, titled “Take the Hit,” and the hour delivered several major turns for Firehouse 51. A routine factory call went wrong, a probationary firefighter lost his spot, Joe Cruz found a reason to keep going, and a quiet candidate finally shared the personal weight he has been carrying. The episode aired on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, on NBC.
A Factory Ammonia Leak Sends Tony to the Hospital
Firehouse 51 responded to a commercial factory with an active ammonia leak. Captain Kelly Severide took command inside the building and found an unresponsive worker. Other employees were trapped in a cold-storage area.
Lieutenant Stella Kidd gave the four probationary firefighters a direct order: locate the shut-off valve, but do not touch it. While Capp and Tony worked to patch a hole in a compromised pipe, a sudden pressure surge blasted gas into Tony’s face. Capp called for help, and paramedics Violet Mikami and Lizzie Novak treated Tony before sending him to the hospital with burns and blisters.
Severide and Kidd Find the Probie Who Turned the Valve
Capp reported hearing an unusual noise before the gas release. Kidd directed Severide to a distribution valve that would have multiplied the line pressure if someone turned it. None of the candidates admitted to touching the controls.
Severide and Kidd inspected the probies’ protective equipment after the shift. Rust on Matthew McCaffrey’s bunker gloves identified him as the person who turned the valve. McCaffrey acknowledged his involvement but did not come forward on his own.
McCaffrey Is Fired After Calling His State Senator Father
Doug Savant guest starred as Chief Tomlin, who arrived at Firehouse 51 to advocate for McCaffrey. McCaffrey had contacted the chief to use his father’s political connections. Tomlin suggested that McCaffrey’s father, an Illinois state senator, could benefit the department.
Severide and Kidd rejected the outside interference. They concluded that McCaffrey’s refusal to follow orders and his unwillingness to accept responsibility made him a danger to the team. Severide terminated McCaffrey from the Chicago Fire Department. On his way out, McCaffrey warned that the situation was not over.

Herrmann Helps Cruz Find His Way Back
Christopher Herrmann spent the episode worried about Joe Cruz, who had stopped leaving his house and had been skipping physical therapy sessions. Herrmann visited Cruz’s home after his shift. Cruz was frustrated and asked him to leave.
Herrmann left Otis’s cane behind on purpose. Cruz came to Firehouse 51 to return it and ended up staying. He joined his colleagues for breakfast and worked on an apparatus compartment door with Herrmann. By the end of the hour, Cruz had returned to physical therapy.
Marcus Burke’s Hospital Secret Comes Out
Candidate Marcus Burke had been guarded and isolated since arriving at Firehouse 51. The episode revealed that Burke’s father is comatose in the hospital. The personal weight explained much of Burke’s guarded behavior.
Burke had visited Gaffney Chicago Medical Center to check on Tony without telling anyone. His decision to visit Tony, combined with his renegade reputation, briefly made him a suspect in the valve incident before the evidence pointed to McCaffrey.
A New Chief Joins the Story
Doug Savant, known for playing Tom Scavo on Desperate Housewives, appeared as Chief Tomlin. The character arrived to push Severide on how he handled the McCaffrey situation. Tomlin’s visit showed that pressure from headquarters is not going away for Severide in his first season as captain.
Episode Review: Strong Performances Lift Familiar Ground
“Take the Hit” did important work for the season’s larger story. Joe Minoso delivered a standout performance as Cruz, moving from anger and withdrawal to a quiet decision to keep fighting. The scenes between Cruz and Herrmann carried the emotional weight of the hour.
The McCaffrey mystery was easier to solve for longtime viewers. Casting news had already made it clear that Matthew Daddario was a recurring guest star while Da’Vinchi, who plays Burke, had been announced as a series regular. That behind-the-scenes detail pointed to McCaffrey as the guilty party before the episode even aired.
The episode also continued the slow-building tension between Lizzie Novak and Sal Vasquez. A stranger left a phone number at the firehouse for Novak, keeping the question of their relationship open.
