The Karate Kid franchise is set for a dramatic return with its upcoming film Karate Kid: Legends. At New York Comic Con 2024, Sony Pictures officially announced that Ralph Macchio will reprise his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso, while Jackie Chan will return as Mr. Han from the 2010 reboot. The film is slated for release on May 30, 2025 and promises to unite multiple eras of the Karate Kid saga.

Karate Kid Legends Trailer Released at NYCC 2024

Sony Pictures unveiled an exclusive trailer for Karate Kid: Legends during the New York Comic Con event, although the trailer has not yet been made available online. The preview, as reported by Deadline, features a sequence set in a martial arts academy, with Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han recruiting Ben Wang’s character, Li Fong, a young fighter-in-training. Fans were treated to a glimpse of Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, alongside a tribute to Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi, whose presence looms over the storyline.

The trailer offers a mix of action-packed moments and emotional undertones. One of the key scenes is set in New York City, showcasing subway confrontations and intense martial arts sequences. In a voiceover, Jackie Chan delivers a pivotal line, asking, “In life, you only have one question: Is it worth fighting for or not?” This sets the tone for the high-stakes battle and the personal growth journey the film promises to depict.

A New Chapter for the Karate Kid Universe

Karate Kid: Legends will be the sixth film in the long-running franchise and aims to unite the different versions of the series for the first time. According to Sony Pictures, this will mark the first collaboration between Ralph Macchio’s original character and Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han from the 2010 reboot. The film, as described by Sony, will explore the concept of mentorship, generational wisdom, and legacy, core themes that have defined the Karate Kid universe.

Ben Wang, the film’s new protagonist, will play Li Fong, a Chinese martial artist in training, searching for direction and strength through his training. Li Fong’s character is expected to have a unique arc, guided by both Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han, who serve as his mentors. The official plot, however, remains under wraps, with Sony only confirming that the story revolves around Li Fong’s struggle and growth through martial arts.

In addition to the action and training sequences, there are hints of romance in the plot, with Sadie Stanley cast as Li Fong’s love interest. The ensemble cast also includes Joshua Jackson, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, and Wyatt Oleff, alongside Jennifer-Lyn Christie.

First-Look Poster and Legacy of the Franchise

Sony Pictures released the first official poster for Karate Kid: Legends shortly after the NYCC trailer premiere. The poster, shared via Sony’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, features Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, and Ben Wang. The caption reads, “Legends are forever,” with the poster showing the characters against the backdrop of a city, likely New York, under a glowing sunset. Fans were quick to respond to the powerful imagery, which symbolically connects the past, present, and future of the Karate Kid series.

The phrase “Legends are forever” signals the film’s deeper message about the lasting impact of mentorship, martial arts, and personal honor. The focus on two legendary actors, Chan and Macchio, along with a new generation represented by Wang, sets high expectations for the film.

Miyagiverse, a term coined by the creators of Cobra Kai, will also play a significant role in the film’s universe. This includes all of the films from the original series that featured Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi, along with the 2010 reboot featuring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. The crossover between these two worlds is unprecedented and is seen as a major draw for both long-time fans and newer audiences.

What to Expect from the Film’s Release

Karate Kid: Legends is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on May 30, 2025. According to Sony Pictures, the film will focus on the bond between mentors and their students, while also exploring the importance of discipline, respect, and personal growth. Fans of the franchise can expect a mixture of emotional depth, intense martial arts choreography, and a tribute to the iconic legacy of Mr. Miyagi, which will be reflected in Daniel LaRusso’s continued journey as a mentor.

While plot details are still scarce, Li Fong’s character arc will likely center around self-discovery and overcoming obstacles through the teachings of both Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso. The dynamic between Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan is highly anticipated, with both characters bringing unique philosophies and fighting styles to the table.

Fans can also expect plenty of nods to the original Karate Kid films, particularly the strong moral lessons and mentorship themes that have always been central to the franchise.
