Jamie Foxx, the renowned actor and comedian, emotionally shared the harrowing story of his near-fatal stroke during his Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…. The incident, which took place in April 2023, left Foxx with no memory of the first 20 days after the stroke and marked one of the most challenging periods of his life.
The Day of the Stroke
On April 11, 2023, Foxx experienced a severe headache and asked for an aspirin. Reflecting on the moment, he recounted how his friends were unsure how to handle the emergency, saying, “Your boys don’t know what the f**k to do.” Before he could take the aspirin, Foxx collapsed and lost consciousness.
He was initially treated with a cortisone shot by a doctor in Atlanta, who sent him home. However, Deidre Dixon, Foxx’s sister, sensed something was wrong. Acting on instinct, she drove him to Piedmont Hospital, despite having no prior knowledge of the facility.
A Life-Saving Diagnosis
At the hospital, doctors discovered that Foxx was suffering from a brain bleed that led to a stroke, which required immediate surgery to save his life. They warned Dixon that without the operation, Foxx wouldn’t survive. Dixon stayed outside the operating room, praying and supporting her brother through the ordeal.
Doctors informed Foxx’s family that while he had a chance at full recovery, the year ahead would be the most challenging of his life. The actor later shared with the audience, “Atlanta, you saved my life.”
Waking Up to a New Reality
Foxx recounted the shock of waking up in a wheelchair, unaware of what had happened. His friend Dave broke the news, telling him he’d had a stroke and couldn’t walk. Initially, Foxx thought it was a cruel joke, saying, “Jamie Foxx don’t get strokes.” He even tried to get out of the wheelchair but quickly realized the gravity of his condition.
Through tears, Foxx reflected on his recovery journey, repeatedly expressing gratitude to his sister for her quick actions and unwavering faith. He added, “Please, Lord, let me get through this.”
