A recent interview with Taeyang of BIGBANG about K-pop’s worldwide success has caused a disagreement between fans of BIGBANG (VIPs) and BTS (ARMYs).
Taeyang’s CNN Interview and Fan Reactions
Taeyang spoke with CNN about the Hallyu wave (Korean Wave). When asked about BIGBANG’s role in K-pop’s global growth, he said:
Thankfully, we were able to open doors to global markets for many K-pop bands that came after us. And they can perform on world stages. I wouldn’t say we presented that, but it feels great that our efforts have played a part in that.
BIGBANG, a second-generation K-pop group, is known for its pioneering work. SUGA of BTS even mentioned on the show “Suchwita” that BIGBANG had a big influence on BTS before their debut:
However, some BTS fans felt that Taeyang should have also mentioned BTS’s contributions to K-pop’s global popularity. They posted comments like “BTS paved the way” on his Instagram.
BIGBANG fans responded in support of Taeyang, and a back-and-forth between the two fan groups began. Some people tried to explain that both BIGBANG and BTS have significantly helped in making K-pop known worldwide.
BIGBANG’s Unofficial Reunion at MAMA 2024
After some time apart, BIGBANG had an unofficial reunion at the 2024 MAMA Awards on G-Dragon’s stage. Originally a five-member group, BIGBANG now consists of three members: G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung. Seungri left the group after the Burning Sun scandal, and T.O.P left to work on his solo career.
The three members performed BANG BANG BANG and FANTASTIC BABY, bringing back memories for many fans.
