The fall finale of 9-1-1 Season 9 delivered major changes for the 118, including a troubling medical mystery for one of its core members and a long-awaited promotion. In Episode 6, “Family History,” Hen began experiencing alarming symptoms she tried to hide, while Chimney finally made a decision about his future with the firehouse.

Hen’s Hidden Health Struggle

The episode placed Hen Wilson at the center of a growing medical scare. What first seemed like a simple rash quickly escalated into more serious symptoms. During a call at a medical spa, Hen’s hand developed a noticeable tremor while she was treating a patient. She brushed off concerns from the spa’s doctor, but the issue persisted.

Later, at home, Hen privately called her mother to ask about their family’s medical history. Shortly after hanging up, she stood up and collapsed in her living room. She remained unconscious for hours, only waking up when her phone buzzed with a call from her wife, Karen. Hen chose to keep the incident a secret, telling Karen she had simply been held up at work.

Her worries grew, and at Chimney’s promotion ceremony, she was seen stumbling. She then approached Maddie Buckley, a former nurse, for advice, posing a question about a hypothetical “patient” with her symptoms. Maddie suggested a CT scan. In the episode’s final moments, Hen decided to get that scan at the same medical spa, paying out of pocket to keep the tests private and away from her family and insurance.

The episode ended without a diagnosis, leaving Hen’s condition a mystery and setting up a major storyline for the show’s return.

Chimney Becomes Captain

In happier news, the 118 finally has a permanent captain. Howard “Chimney” Han had been serving as interim captain but was initially hesitant to take the role permanently. He struggled with the idea of officially stepping into Bobby Nash’s place and worried about how the team would react.

After encouragement from his wife, Maddie, he changed his mind. Chief Simpson presided over an official ceremony at the firehouse, swearing Chimney in as the new captain.

“What the hell took you so long?” Chief Simpson joked during the ceremony. “But I think it was his hesitation, that sober consideration, that demonstrated he was the right person for the job.”

To mark the occasion, the teamโ€”Buck, Eddie, Hen, and Raviโ€”presented Chimney with a special gift. They gave him a watch engraved with the words, “The 118 is not just a number, it’s us,” a direct quote from his own inspirational speech last season. Chimney was visibly moved and promised his team, “I won’t let you guys down.”

Buck’s Guidance and Harry’s Success

Meanwhile, Buck stepped into a mentor role for Harry Grant, the son of Athena and Bobby. Harry was preparing for his entrance test to the fire academy but was struggling with the interview process due to a past criminal record. When he was a minor, Harry was arrested after fighting a convenience store owner in self-defense, and he believed this would disqualify him.

Buck refused to let Harry give up. He arranged for a chance meeting with Fire Chief Simpson at a restaurant, giving Harry an opportunity to speak for himself. Harry explained the situation and told the chief he would handle things differently now. Impressed, Chief Simpson accepted him into the academy.

Athena’s Personal Case

Athena Grant responded to a difficult call involving a teenage girl who had attempted suicide after receiving thousands of cruel cyberbullying messages. The case brought back painful memories for Athena, reminding her of her own daughter May’s similar experience years earlier.

Athena’s investigation led to a shocking discovery: the bully was the victim’s own mother. The mother had created fake numbers to send the abusive texts. After being confronted, the woman locked herself in a bathroom and overdosed on pills, but Athena and paramedics arrived in time to save her. Her daughter, Alisha, told her mother she would never speak to her again.

The case prompted a heartfelt conversation between Athena and May. May reassured her mother that she was doing well now and shared that seeing Athena’s face when she woke up in the hospital was what helped her the most during her own recovery.

The 9-1-1 Season 9 midseason finale aired on November 13, 2025. New episodes will return on January 8, 2026, on ABC.
