If you are watching the new season of A Man on the Inside and think Julie’s mother looks incredibly familiar, you’re right. The actress playing the estranged and charmingly tricky Vanessa Cascade is Constance Marie, a performer with a career spanning over three decades on television and in film. She joins the hit Netflix comedy for its second season, which started streaming on November 20, 2025.

Meet Vanessa Cascade: Julie’s Con Artist Mother

In A Man on the Inside Season 2, the story moves from the Pacific View Retirement Community to Wheeler College, where Ted Danson’s character, Charles, takes on a new undercover case. A key new character is Vanessa Cascade, the long-lost mother of private investigator Julie Kovalenko, played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada.

Vanessa has a complicated history. She spent years as a skilled con artist, which led to her serving prison time when Julie was just a child. This past created deep wounds and led to their estrangement. Their reunion in the new season is not a simple, happy one. Vanessa re-enters Julie’s life hoping to rebuild their relationship, but years of abandonment and mistrust make it a difficult process. However, Vanessa isn’t just there for family drama. She proves useful, using her old pickpocketing and con artist skills to assist Julie and Charles with their investigation at the college.

A major moment for the mother-daughter pair happens during a Thanksgiving episode, where they finally begin to open up to each other and start to mend their broken relationship.

Constance Marie’s Career: From Dancing with Bowie to Beloved TV Mom

Before becoming an actress, Constance Marie was a dancer. As a teenager in Los Angeles, she was part of the underground break-dancing scene. Her talent led to a huge opportunity: she was chosen from hundreds of dancers to join David Bowie’s 1987 Glass Spider Tour. She later appeared in the tour’s 1988 concert film.

Her dance experience helped pave her way into acting. One of her first major television roles was in the CBS adaptation of Dirty Dancing. Since then, she has become a familiar face in many living rooms, known for playing relatable and strong maternal figures.

For many viewers, Constance Marie is best known as Angie Lopez on the hit ABC sitcom George Lopez, which aired from 2002 to 2007. She played the wife of George Lopez and the mother of their two children, grounding the show’s humor with heart and warmth. Her performance was so beloved that she received an Emmy nomination for her work on the show.

She further solidified her reputation in family-centered stories with her role as Regina Vasquez on the ABC Family/Freeform drama Switched at Birth (2011-2017). She played the mother of a teenage girl who discovers she was switched at birth with another girl in the hospital.

“We shot the moon in some ways with the folks who joined us,” said series creator Mike Schur about assembling the Season 2 cast. “It felt like one of those kismet-y things where every time we had an archetype in our head of what kind of person it should be, that person actually was available and said yes.”

Beyond TV: Film Roles and Voice Acting

Constance Marie’s work extends beyond television. She has several notable film credits. She played Marcela Quintanilla, the mother of the iconic singer, in the 1997 biopic Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez. She also appeared in the celebrated drama My Family (1995).

She is also an accomplished voice actor. Fans of animated films may recognize her as Imelda, the wife of Puss in Boots, in the 2011 Shrek spin-off film Puss in Boots. She also voiced the character Doña Paloma in the Disney animated series Elena of Avalor.

More recently, she has appeared in series like the Amazon Prime animated drama Undone (2019-2022) and the Prime Video series With Love (2021-2023).

A Talented Ensemble in a Celebrated Show

Constance Marie joins a widely praised ensemble in A Man on the Inside. The show, created by Michael Schur, debuted in November 2024 and was quickly renewed for a second season. It stars Ted Danson as Charles, a retired professor who finds a new purpose as an amateur private investigator.

The second season sees Charles going undercover at Wheeler College, leading to new faces alongside returning favorites. The new cast includes Mary Steenburgen (who is married to Danson in real life) as a music professor, Max Greenfield as the college president, and Gary Cole as a billionaire donor. Marie’s character, Vanessa, is listed among the recurring cast for the season.

You can stream both seasons of A Man on the Inside, featuring Constance Marie’s performance as Vanessa Cascade, exclusively on Netflix.
