What Happened In Episode 5: Little Spark?

The last episode centered on a big fight and a painful truth. The group faced a dangerous magic user named Owelia, who was trying to stop them. After a difficult battle, the group managed to capture her. While questioning her, she hinted at knowing secrets about one of their own members, Caleb Widogast.

Owelia revealed that Caleb was once a Volstrucker, a kind of elite assassin for the Dwendalian Empire. This shocked the group, especially Beau, who had already been suspicious of him. Flashbacks in the episode showed Caleb’s past. He was recruited into a special academy as a young man and was trained in powerful magic.

The most difficult part of his past was shown. As a Volstrucker, Caleb was ordered to set fire to his own family’s home because they were seen as traitors to the Empire. He obeyed the order, which resulted in the death of his parents and his pet cat. After Owelia escaped, Caleb chased her into a forest and they fought. Caleb won the fight, but before she died, Owelia sent him a message using his real name, Bren. Caleb then returned to his new friends and told them the full story of his past.

What To Expect In Episode 6: Many Gifts

While an official description for Episode 6 has not been shared by Amazon, the events of the last episode clearly set the stage for what comes next.

The main story will likely deal with the immediate aftermath of Caleb’s confession. He has told Beauregard, Jester, Fjord, Nott, and Mollymauk that he used to be an assassin for the Empire. How the group reacts to this news will be important. Can they still trust him? Will they decide to stay together as a team? These are questions the new episode may answer.

The group is also on a mission involving a powerful object called The Beacon. This arcane relic can change reality and is wanted by dangerous people. Their journey to keep it safe will continue, but now with this new tension among them.

Other characters also have their own stories. The goblin Nott has a deep connection to Caleb, hoping his magic can one day help her with a personal problem related to her own past. Fjord is dealing with strange powers from his magical sword, and Jester is always bringing her own unique chaos to every situation.

The Voices Behind The Characters

The show features the main cast of Critical Role voicing their own characters from the original game campaign. The group includes:

  • Liam O’Brien as Caleb Widogast, the human wizard with a tragic past.
  • Laura Bailey as Jester Lavorre, a cheerful blue tiefling cleric.
  • Travis Willingham as Fjord Stone, a half-orc warlock with a mysterious sword.
  • Sam Riegel as Nott the Brave, a goblin with a fondness for drink and a secret hope.
  • Marisha Ray as Beauregard Lionett, a human monk with a sharp mind.
  • Taliesin Jaffe as Mollymauk Tealeaf, a flamboyant tiefling who works at a carnival.
  • Ashley Johnson as Yasha Nydoorin, a barbarian known as “The Orphan Maker”.
  • Matthew Mercer, the usual Dungeon Master for Critical Role, voices the elf spy Essek Thelyss.

The show also has many famous guest stars lending their voices, including Alan Cumming, Ming-Na Wen, Anjelica Huston, and Auli’i Cravalho.

More About The Show And Where To Watch

The Mighty Nein is the second animated series from Critical Role on Prime Video, following The Legend of Vox Machina. This new story is set about twenty years after the events of Vox Machina, but in a different part of the fantasy world of Exandria. You do not need to have seen the first series to understand or enjoy The Mighty Nein.

A notable difference is the length of the episodes. While The Legend of Vox Machina had episodes around 22 minutes long, episodes of The Mighty Nein are between 42 and 48 minutes. This gives the story more time to develop the characters and their world. Travis Willingham, one of the stars and producers, explained that the longer format gives them “a little bit more road, a little more runway” to tell the story properly.

If you need to catch up, the first five episodes of Season 1 are available to stream right now on Amazon Prime Video. After Episode 6 arrives on December 10, two more episodes will follow to complete the season. Episode 7, titled Belonging, is set for December 17, and the season finale, Episode 8: The Zadash Job, will be released on December 22.
