The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now streaming on Disney+, and the show’s cast says the adventure has grown up right along with its young heroes. Season 2 adapts Rick Riordan’s book The Sea of Monsters, sending Percy, Annabeth, and their new ally Tyson on a dangerous mission to find the Golden Fleece and save Camp Half-Blood. Actors from the series explain that as the characters face bigger monsters and tougher choices, the show’s tone is maturing in a natural way that mirrors the awkward and exciting journey through the teenage years.

Adam Copeland on the Show’s Natural Growth

Adam Copeland, who plays the god of war Ares, recently shared his thoughts on the evolution of the series. He connected the show’s changing feel to the real-life growth of its young stars and their characters’ experiences.

“The kids are growing, and they’re not so much kids anymore,” Copeland said. “I think it naturally follows the progression of what happens to you as you’re going through your teens. I think that’s why the books always connected, because I feel like people saw a bit of themselves in these characters and the awkward phases that you go through”.

Copeland also expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the project, calling it a “gift” to play a character like Ares, who allows for a lot of creative exploration. He praised the filming environment in Vancouver and the dedication of the cast and crew.

What Season 2 Covers: New Quest and Bigger Stakes

The core story for this season follows Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) as they embark on a new quest. The magical borders of Camp Half-Blood are failing, poisoned by a mysterious threat. The only thing that can heal them is the Golden Fleece, a mythical artifact located in the dangerous Sea of Monsters.

Percy must also grapple with a shocking personal discovery: he has a half-brother named Tyson, who is a Cyclops. Meanwhile, the threat from the titan Kronos and the traitorous Luke Castellan continues to grow, putting all demigods in greater danger.

The main confirmed returning cast includes:

  • Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson
  • Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase
  • Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood
  • Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse La Rue
  • Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan

Key new characters joining the cast:

  • Daniel Diemer as Tyson, Percy’s Cyclops half-brother.
  • Tamara Smart as Thalia Grace, a pivotal character from Annabeth’s past.

Inside the Making of a Bigger Season

The move to adapt The Sea of Monsters required a larger scale in production. To create the fantastical locations, the show shifted towards using more practical sets and real locations compared to the first season.

Actors have highlighted the impressive set built for Clarisse’s warship, The Ironclad, and the detailed set for Luke’s yacht, the Princess Andromeda. Walker Scobell noted that working on actual sets, rather than just green screens, helped the actors feel more like they were on a real adventure.

Author and executive producer Rick Riordan has been closely involved. In a November update, he shared that while the large action sequences are impressive, it’s often the quieter character moments that stand out the most.

“The scenes that have stuck with me are the quieter ones โ€” the characters learning to trust each other, to be a family, to be conflicted about their feelings,” Riordan said.

Key Changes from the Book to the Screen

As with the first season, the show makes several adjustments when adapting the book The Sea of Monsters for television. These changes aim to expand the story or adapt elements that work better on screen.

  • Tyson’s Introduction: In the series, Percy’s mother, Sally Jackson, meets Tyson at a shelter and takes him in before the story begins. This changes their first meeting from the book and gives Sally a more active role in the storyline.
  • A New Opening Attack: The monster attack that opens the season has been moved from Percy’s school to Camp Half-Blood, combining two early threats from the book into one sequence.
  • Grover’s New Allies: Grover’s initial scenes introduce new demigod characters aligned with Luke and Kronos, creating additional antagonists for the heroes.
  • Drama Between Percy and Annabeth: The show adds new tension between Percy and Annabeth early in the season, including Annabeth being told she cannot let Percy go on a quest, which tests their friendship.
