The eighth season of The Rookie is set for a major shift, taking the action from the streets of Los Angeles to a high-stakes mission in Europe. The new season, which premieres in early 2026, promises to test the officers of the Mid-Wilshire Division with an international case, evolving relationships, and career-changing decisions.

The season will pick up shortly after the events of the Season 7 finale. For the first time in the show’s history, filming occurred outside the United States, with key cast members traveling to Prague in the Czech Republic.

Release Date and Streaming Details

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The Rookie will return to ABC at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. It will air in its usual time slot following the premiere of Will Trent Season 4 and the mid-season return of High Potential. The season is confirmed to have 18 episodes.

For viewers who stream, new episodes will be available on Hulu the day after they air on ABC. All previous seasons of the show are also available to stream on Hulu.

Plot and Storylines: A Global Mission and Personal Challenges

The core story for the start of Season 8 sends John Nolan, his wife Bailey Nune, and Detective Nyla Harper to Prague. They are working with the FBI and a familiar, untrustworthy faceโ€”corrupt lawyer Monica Stevensโ€”to track down and capture a notorious international arms dealer. This plot directly continues from the Season 7 finale, where Monica secured an immunity deal with the U.S. government.

“Once I was like, ‘I want to go somewhere for the premiere,’ it became a conversation about whereโ€ฆ Prague immediately jumped out as such a cinematic city. It obviously feels very different from Los Angeles,” said showrunner Alexi Hawley, explaining the international shift.

Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, the rest of the team works to stop the arms dealer’s local operations. The new season will also introduce significant personal challenges for several characters:

  • Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen: Their relationship, known to fans as “Chenford,” is at a critical point. At the end of last season, Tim asked Lucy to move in with him, but she was asleep and didn’t hear the proposal. Showrunner Alexi Hawley confirmed they “definitely turned a corner” but still need to have a crucial conversation.
  • Wesley Evers: He will explore a major career move, with hints that he may run for District Attorney.
  • Bailey Nune: Her story involves a potential job offer in Washington, D.C., which could force Nolan to consider a major life change.
  • Lieutenant Wade Grey: His marriage is expected to face serious strain.

Familiar villains will return, including Oscar Hutchinson and Monica Stevens. However, Hawley suggested that Oscar’s long-running story may be approaching its conclusion.

Cast: Who is Returning and Who is Not

The main cast from Season 7 is returning for the new season. Deric Augustine, who joined in Season 7 as Officer Miles Penn, has been promoted to a series regular.

The full list of series regulars for Season 8 includes:

  • Mekia Cox as Detective Nyla Harper
  • Alyssa Diaz as Detective Angela Lopez
  • Richard T. Jones as Lieutenant Wade Grey

  • Eric Winter as Sergeant Tim Bradford
  • Jenna Dewan as Firefighter Bailey Nune
  • Shawn Ashmore as Attorney Wesley Evers

Actor Tru Valentino, who plays Aaron Thorsen, will make an appearance in Season 8, but he is no longer a series regular and the number of his episodes is not confirmed. Patrick Keleher, who played rookie officer Seth Ridley, is not returning for the new season. Showrunner Alexi Hawley left the door open for the character to potentially return in the future.

Recurring guests include Bridget Regan as Monica Stevens and Matthew Glave as Oscar Hutchinson. Fans can also expect to see Tim Bradford’s mother on screen for the first time.
