A major character death pact and direct warnings from the show’s creators have set a tense stage for the series finale of “Stranger Things.”
With the release of Volume 2, the final season of Stranger Things has arrived at a critical juncture, setting the stage for its ultimate conclusion. While no core characters met their end in the latest episodes, the narrative has laid explicit groundwork for potential sacrifices. Showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer have also provided crucial context, tempering expectations of a bloodbath while confirming that the ending will be emotional and surprising. As fans prepare for the finale on December 31, 2025, the central question is whether the show will follow through on the dramatic death plan proposed in Volume 2 or find another way to end the story.
The Death Pact: Eleven and Kali’s Proposed Sacrifice
The most direct setup for a character death comes at the end of Chapter Seven: The Bridge. In a pivotal scene, Kali Prasad (Linnea Berthelsen) presents a stark solution to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
Kali argues that the cycle of exploitation by government forces like Dr. Kay will never end as long as they are alive. Their unique blood, which grants them powers, is the target. Dr. Kay’s ongoing attempts to use Kali’s blood for transfusions—attempts that have already resulted in the deaths of multiple mothers—prove the point. Kali’s grim proposal is that after they defeat Vecna and rescue the children, she and Eleven should remain on the “bridge” between dimensions. When the Upside Down collapses, they would vanish with it, permanently removing their blood from the military’s reach.
“Don’t you see, Jane? It’s a cycle. A terrible, vicious cycle,” Kali says to Eleven. “But we can stop it tonight… After we kill [Henry], after the children are rescued, we don’t leave with the others. We stay on the bridge. When the Upside Down vanishes, so will we. It is the only way, Jane. The only way.”
The show has subtly foreshadowed this moment. Earlier in the season, Eleven and Kali were seen arriving at a hospital in a hearse, a visual hint with grim connotations. Furthermore, the official Season 5 trailer featured Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever,” a song choice many fans interpreted as a hint at Eleven’s mortality. The narrative has also drawn parallels between Eleven and self-sacrificial figures, setting her up as a potential martyr who would give her life to save her friends and the world.
Who Else Is in Danger? Assessing the Finale’s Stakes
While Eleven and Kali’s pact is the most clearly defined threat, other characters faced peril in Volume 2, and their safety in the finale is not guaranteed.
- Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers: Their relationship reached a turning point when they were nearly consumed by melting matter in the Upside Down. Believing they were about to die, Jonathan confessed he was planning to propose. Their survival was a last-minute reprieve, but their emotional resolution makes them vulnerable in a different way.
- Steve Harrington: Fan anxiety about Steve’s fate remains high. The Duffer Brothers have acknowledged this, with Matt Duffer stating, “It would be the next logical step… He keeps getting beaten up more and more. The only way we could take it further is death”. In Volume 2, Steve was nearly killed in a multi-story fall, saved only by Dustin’s quick action.
- Jim Hopper: Hopper has a long history of flirting with sacrifice. He has already attempted to sacrifice himself at least once in Season 5. His protective, paternal nature toward Eleven and Joyce makes him a prime candidate for a heroic, life-ending act.
- Will Byers: While Will’s new powers and central role in the story’s origin suggest he is relatively safe, his emotional arc came to a head in Volume 2 when he came out to his friends and family. This moment of closure could, narratively, precede a sacrifice.
- Holly Wheeler: The youngest Wheeler sibling finds herself in one of the most precarious positions. After escaping Vecna’s mind with Max, Holly did not wake up in the real world. Instead, she awoke in the Abyss, was captured by Vecna, and has been plugged into his hive mind alongside other kidnapped children. Her rescue is a primary goal of the final mission.
The Creators’ Guidance: What to Expect from the Finale’s Tone
Importantly, the Duffer Brothers have recently commented on their philosophy for the finale, which helps frame these theories.
In an interview after Volume 2’s release, Matt Duffer directly addressed comparisons to more ruthless series, setting clear expectations.
“It’s not Game of Thrones. We’re not in Westeros… There’s not going to be a Red Wedding situation,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think some things happen in the finale that are very surprising, but we’re not trying to shock or upset anyone. I hope by the time people get to the end of the finale that it just feels like there’s something inevitable about what happens, and that it doesn’t feel painful but feels satisfying.”
This suggests that while character deaths are possible—and have been teased as “emotional” and containing “the most violent death of any season”—they are unlikely to be gratuitous or affect a large swath of the main cast. The goal is a narratively inevitable and emotionally satisfying conclusion, not carnage.
