What Happened in Episode 8: A Man Possessed
The official summary for the episode states: “After arson affects someone close to Firehouse 51, Severide hunts for the culprit. Meanwhile, Mouch and Pascal seek innovative solutions to face looming budget cuts”.
The episode resolved a cliffhanger from the fall finale. In that previous episode, Severide, Captain Van Meter, and a school principal were trapped in a building that was deliberately set on fire. In “A Man Possessed,” Severide used a harness to rescue them all from the burning building. However, Captain Van Meter inhaled a large amount of smoke and sustained a brutal shoulder injury. His condition was so severe that doctors placed him in a medically-induced coma, which motivated Severide to find the arsonist.
Simultaneously, the firehouse dealt with institutional challenges. Battalion Chief Pascal informed Mouch that his fire engine, Engine 51, was ordered to be decommissioned due to citywide budget cuts. The two worked together to try and stop this from happening. Pascal later experienced a personal shock when he discovered that the order came from Annette Davis, who had used their personal relationship to hide this decision. Mouch also heard troubling news from a union representative, suggesting his future at the firehouse could be in jeopardy.
