Amazon MGM Studios has released the first official image of Sophie Turner as the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. The photo shows Turner in a costume that closely follows the classic character design from the original Tomb Raider video games. The image was shared to announce that filming for the new Prime Video series has officially started.
This live-action television adaptation aims to be the most authentic translation of the game series to date. Led by creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the project brings together a major star, a celebrated writer, and a clear vision to present a classic version of Lara Croft.
A Direct Nod to Classic Video Game Design
The first photo of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft is defined by its commitment to the source material. The costume design directly references the character’s appearance from the 1990s PlayStation games.
Turner is shown wearing the character’s signature elements: a teal tank top, shorts, and dual pistol holsters strapped to her thighs. A key detail that fans instantly recognized is the pair of red-lensed sunglasses, an accessory famously featured on the cover of the 1998 game Tomb Raider III. The overall look marks a clear shift from the more modern, survival-gear style worn by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 film. Instead, it embraces the stylized and instantly recognizable aesthetic that made Lara Croft a gaming icon.
“I can’t say much, but my preparation began in February [2025]. I’ve been training for a long time now, coming up on a year,” Turner revealed about her preparation for the physically demanding role.
Behind the Scenes of the Tomb Raider Series
The series is a major production for Prime Video, developed by Amazon MGM Studios. The creative force behind the show is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the Emmy-winning writer and star of Fleabag. Waller-Bridge is serving as the creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. She is partnering with co-showrunner Chad Hodge, with Jonathan Van Tulleken directing and executive producing.
The show boasts a strong supporting cast featuring several well-known actors. Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs are among the high-profile names joining the adventure. The full cast also includes Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.
The series is part of a larger 30th-anniversary initiative for the Tomb Raider brand. This includes a video game remake, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, scheduled for 2026, and a brand-new game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, expected in 2027.
The Legacy of Live-Action Lara Croft
Sophie Turner is the third major actress to portray Lara Croft in a live-action project. The role was first made famous by Angelina Jolie in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its 2003 sequel. Jolie’s portrayal, with its own distinctive costume, set a high bar and remains a visual benchmark for many fans.
In 2018, Alicia Vikander took on the character in a film that drew inspiration from the grittier 2013 video game reboot. Turner’s version now introduces a third distinct look, one that deliberately reaches back to the series’ earliest roots.
“I’m excited for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider,” Turner added. “I think it’s going to be something special.”
