A new trailer for Invincible Season 4 shows Atom Eve struggling with her abilities, and the reason connects to a major, emotional storyline from the original comics.

The brief look at the upcoming season includes a scene where Atom Eve tells Mark Grayson, “Things are changing, Mark, and not for the better,” as she visibly struggles to control her reality-altering powers. This instability was first hinted at in the final moments of Season 3. After their battle with Conquest, Eve used her powers to remove Mark’s suit, which then glowed and began to melt on the floor.

While this problem surfaced after Eve unlocked new power during a near-death fight, the root cause is different. According to the comics the show adapts, the fluctuations are linked to a life-changing event: Eve is pregnant with Mark’s child.

The Comic Book Source of Eve’s Power Problem

The situation shown in the Invincible Season 4 trailer directly follows events from the comic books. In the source material, it is confirmed that Eve becomes pregnant shortly after the battle with Conquest.

Her pregnancy causes significant physical and hormonal changes, which in turn disrupt her precise control over her atomic manipulation abilities. This makes her powers behave in unpredictable and unreliable ways. In the comics, neither Eve nor Mark is immediately aware of the pregnancy, which explains why her sudden lack of control is so confusing and alarming to them.

The timing is particularly difficult. Mark is about to leave Earth for an extended period to join the Coalition of Planets and fight in the Viltrumite War. Faced with this, Eve makes a difficult choice. She decides not to tell Mark about the pregnancy before he leaves. Her reasoning is that she does not want him to be distracted or emotionally burdened while fighting in a dangerous war, fearing it could get him hurt.

Understanding Atom Eve’s Powers and Their Limits

To understand why pregnancy affects her, it helps to know how Eve’s powers work. Atom Eve can manipulate atomic and subatomic structures, allowing her to alter, deconstruct, and reconstruct non-living matter at will.

However, she has always had a major mental block placed on her abilities. She cannot manipulate biological or sentient matter. This block was partially overcome in Season 3 during her fight with the Viltrumite Conquest. Facing death, her mind unlocked the ability to alter her own biology, allowing her to heal fatal wounds and essentially resurrect herself. This moment revealed that Atom Eve is potentially immortal, but it also set the stage for new complications.

“In one scene, Eve struggles to control her powers and warns Mark, saying, ‘Things are changing, Mark, and not for the better.’”

The recent trailer confirms that the control issues introduced at the end of last season are not resolved. They are a continuing plot point as Season 4 begins.

A Challenging Emotional Storyline for Mark and Eve

The pregnancy storyline leads to significant emotional challenges for both characters in the comics. With Mark away at war for months and his survival uncertain, Eve is left alone to deal with her unstable powers and the reality of her pregnancy.

This intense pressure leads Eve to make a painful personal decision. She decides to have an abortion. Creator Robert Kirkman included this sensitive topic in the comics, and given the show’s faithful adaptation so far, it is likely this arc will be part of Season 4.

When Mark eventually returns to Earth, his reaction is not anger. He responds with understanding and apologizes to Eve for not being there to support her during such a difficult time. This moment ultimately strengthens their relationship. Later in the comics, Eve becomes pregnant again, and they have a daughter named Terra.

New Villains and the Viltrumite War in Season 4

While Eve and Mark’s personal life creates drama, larger galactic threats are arriving. Invincible Season 4 will introduce several powerful new villains from the comics.

The most formidable is Thragg, the Grand Regent of the Viltrumite army. Voiced by Lee Pace, Thragg is considered one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy and takes direct charge of the threat to Earth. He will be joined by Dinosaurus, a villain with a twisted ecological agenda voiced by Matthew Rhys, and Universa, an alien warrior voiced by Danai Gurira who threatens Earth to save her own world.

The official synopsis for the season indicates Mark will be fighting to protect his home amid these escalating conflicts.
