The final season of The Boys is shaping up to be the most brutal one yet, and star Karl Urban is making it clear that viewers should prepare for the worst when the show returns in April 2026.
The actor who plays the vicious Billy Butcher recently shared some serious details about what fans can expect from the end of the Prime Video series. And according to him, the bloodshed will begin immediately.
Urban spoke with Variety during a recent press event and did not hold back when describing the fifth and final season. He promised that the show is going out with a massive bang and that no character is safe from meeting a violent end .
“Every season, but particularly this season, from episode one, you’re like, ‘Oh wow.’ Nobody is safe. Fatalities right from the get-go. Let’s go! Last season! It’s all on!” Urban said .
This is a major warning for longtime viewers who have watched characters survive through four seasons of chaos. The final season will not waste any time before taking out major players. Urban confirmed that even Billy Butcher himself could be on the chopping block, and the danger starts as soon as the premiere episode begins .
Where We Left Billy Butcher at the End of Season 4
To understand what is coming in Season 5, it helps to remember where Butcher was left at the end of the last season. The character is in the worst possible shape, both physically and mentally.
Butcher has been using Compound V to gain powers, but it came at a terrible cost. He is now on the verge of death because of the temporary V usage. On top of that, he has completely lost his grip on reality. The Season 4 finale showed him hallucinating friends who died years ago, including his wife Becca .
His new powers are tied directly to the darkest parts of his mind. He can now generate vicious black tentacles that come out of his body, making him more dangerous but also more unstable. To make things even more terrifying, Butcher is also in possession of a virus that could kill every supe on the planet .
So when Season 5 starts, Butcher is dying, crazy, superpowered in a horrific way, and holding the ultimate weapon. That combination does not lead to a calm and peaceful final season.
Homelander Rules With Total Power
Butcher is not the only one in a dangerous position. Antony Starr’s Homelander ended Season 4 in complete control of the United States government. With help from Susan Heyward’s Sister Sage, he has taken over and now runs the country without any real opposition .
For Homelander, the top priority is still getting rid of The Boys once and for all. There are very few people he hates more than the small team of regular humans who keep trying to stop him. With the government behind him and no checks on his power, Homelander is free to go after them with everything he has.
Urban’s tease about fatalities starting in episode one makes even more sense when you consider that Homelander now has the full force of the U.S. government at his disposal. The body count is expected to be massive .
The Scar Mystery Will Finally Be Solved
Beyond all the blood and violence, there is one personal detail about Butcher that fans have wondered about for years. Urban confirmed during an appearance at MCM London Comic Con that Season 5 will finally explain how Butcher got the scar on his forehead .
The scar has been there since the very first episode, but the show has never addressed how it happened. When a fan asked Urban about it directly, he admitted that he personally liked the mystery. But he also dropped a small spoiler.
“That’s a great question,” Urban told the crowd. “And you know, personally, I would actually love to keep that a bit enigmatic, butโฆ season 5, you’re gonna find out the origin of Butcher’s scar. That’s the one spoiler I will tell you. So, obviously I can’t divulge to you in this room, but you’re going to find out” .
It is a small detail compared to the bigger story of whether supes will live or die. But for fans who have watched every episode, it is a mystery that has lasted for years. Season 5 will finally provide the answer.
Why This Season Means So Much to Karl Urban
Urban has played many famous roles in his career, including รomer in The Lord of the Rings and Judge Dredd in Dredd. He is also set to play Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie. But despite all those iconic characters, he says that Butcher is his favorite .
During the same MCM London Comic Con appearance, Urban talked about what makes this role special to him.
“I think out of all the characters I’ve played, though, he is probably my favorite to date, I think. Yeah, I had such a great time playing him and obviously, playing a character over five seasons is quite different to playing a character for, you know, three months or six weeks. So [I have] a very special sort of fond connection with Butcher” .
That emotional connection makes sense. Urban has played Butcher since the show started in 2019. When filming wrapped on the final season, he shared an emotional goodbye post on Instagram with a photo of himself and Jack Quaid (Hughie) on a beach in full costume . After seven years, the journey is finally ending.
What the Story Will Be About in Season 5
Amazon Prime Video has released an official description of what the final season will cover, and it sounds like complete chaos.
In the fifth and final season, it’s Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a “Freedom Camp.” Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko is nowhere to be found. But when Butcher reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map, he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it .
That description matches what Urban has been teasing. The team is broken, scattered, and in hiding or prison. Butcher is back with a weapon that could end all supes, but he is also dying and completely insane. It sets up a final confrontation where no one is guaranteed to walk away.
Showrunner Eric Kripke has been working hard on the final season. In a social media post, he shared that editing is completely done, visual effects are about halfway finished, and he is happy with how the season is turning out .
The Connection to Gen V
The final season will also connect to the spinoff series Gen V. The second season of that show ended with The Boys characters Starlight and A-Train going on a recruiting mission, which means characters from the spinoff could appear in the final season of the main show .
However, showrunner Eric Kripke has warned fans not to expect Jaz Sinclair’s Marie Moreau to show up and easily defeat Homelander. While Marie has the potential to be incredibly powerful because she can control blood, Kripke said in interviews that she is not at that level yet. She is not going to be a last-minute hero who saves the day without effort .
The Release Plan for The Boys Season 5
Amazon Prime Video officially announced the release schedule during the CCXP Brazil event in December 2025. The final season will debut on April 8, 2026, with the first two episodes dropping together .
After that, new episodes will arrive every Wednesday until the series finale on May 20, 2026 . The season will have eight episodes total, and the entire season will qualify for the 2026 Emmys because the eligibility cut-off date is May 31 .
For viewers around the world, here is when you can expect the show to arrive:
- United States: April 8 on Prime Video
- United Kingdom: April 8 on Prime Video
- Canada: April 8 on Prime Video
- Australia: April 8 on Prime Video (likely AEST)
- India: April 8 on Prime Video (IST evening)
The show arrives a little less than two years after the Season 4 finale in July 2024 . If you need to catch up or refresh your memory, all previous seasons of The Boys and the spinoff Gen V are available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video .
With Urban promising that “nobody is safe” and that characters will start dying from episode one, the final season is shaping up to be the bloody, chaotic ending that fans of the show have always expected. The only question left is who makes it out alive.
