The new Yellowstone spinoff titled Marshals finally arrived on March 1, and it brought with it a shocking twist that has left the Dutton family fanbase reeling. The series picks up the story of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), but it does so without his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) by his side. The premiere episode confirmed what many had feared: Monica Dutton is dead.
For Luke Grimes, who has shared the screen with Asbille since Yellowstone began in 2018, learning about this storyline was a deeply personal moment. He admitted he was โheartbroken for myself and for [Kelsey]โ when he first heard the pitch for the spinoff . The emotional weight of continuing the story of Kayce without Monica was so significant that Grimes took it upon himself to make a difficult phone call to his longtime co-star and friend before moving forward with the project.
Luke Grimes Had to Work Up the Courage to Call Kelsey Asbille
When Luke Grimes learned that the entire premise of Marshals hinged on the death of Monica Dutton, his first instinct was not about the script or his careerโit was about his friend. Grimes knew that delivering this news to Kelsey Asbille would not be easy.
โI worked up the courage to call. I didnโt know how she was going to feel about it,โ Grimes shared in an interview with TV Insider . The actor explained that over the years of filming Yellowstone, Asbille had become one of his closest friends. He valued her not just as a colleague but as a person. โSheโs the coolest actor Iโve ever worked with. Sheโs down to earth, sweet, and kind to every other actor and the crew,โ he said .
The phone call went better than he feared. Grimes revealed that Asbille handled the news with grace and professionalism. โIn true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood,โ he recalled . He added that while it was sad to say goodbye to their on-screen partnership, he has no doubt about her future success. โSheโs going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. Sheโs going to work. Thatโs not an issueโ .
Why Monica Had to Die for the Yellowstone Spinoff to Work
For viewers who watched Kayce and Monica ride off into the sunset at the end of Yellowstone in 2024, the news of her death in Marshals came as a brutal shock. But according to the creative team behind the spinoff, it was the only way to bring Kayce back into a compelling story .
Marshals creator and executive producer Spencer Hudnut explained the difficult decision. โIn Yellowstone, Kayce and Monica had such a happy ending. We needed to turn his world upside down,โ Hudnut told USA TODAY . He noted that any heroโs journey often begins with tragedy. If Kayce remained happy and content on his ranch with Monica and Tate, there would be no reason for him to pick up a badge and join an elite unit of the U.S. Marshals .
Grimes eventually came to understand this reasoning, even if it broke his heart at first. โFor a long time I just hoped that wasnโt going to be the case, but sort of realised after a while that it becomes the motor for the whole show,โ he explained . He acknowledged that if the happy ending remained intact, โthereโd be no reason for him to make any changes because he already got his dream lifeโ .
The show also tied Monicaโs death to a real-world issue. Her passing was linked to cancer caused by toxic chemicals dumped on the Broken Rock reservation . Hudnut said this was intentional, explaining, โWeโre shining a light on an issueโฆ Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them. We wanted to make her death about a bigger issueโ .
How the Marshals Premiere Handled Monica’s Shocking Fate
The March 1 premiere episode of Marshals, titled โPiya Wiconi,โ did not immediately confirm Monicaโs death . Instead, the episode slowly built toward the revelation through painful clues. Viewers saw Kayce waking up alone from a nightmare, calling out Monicaโs name. Later, their son Tate (Brecken Merrill) is seen at a protest holding a picture of his mother, hinting that she was a victim of the environmental disaster affecting the reservation .
The emotional climax of the episode came when Kayce visited Monicaโs grave. In a tear-filled scene set to Grimesโ own song โHaunted,โ Kayce spoke to his dead wife .
โI miss my wife, my best friend. My only friend. Iโve been so lost. The best part of me died with you. You always told me to fight for the life I want. But I had the life I wanted. It was with you.โ
Grimes called this scene the reason Kayce accepts the Marshals badge. โI put pressure on myself to get that scene right,โ he said. โThe scene is why Kayce accepts the โMarshalsโ badge. His dream life is gone. He has no choice but to try something elseโ .
Fans React to Monica’s Death in the Yellowstone Spinoff
The reaction from the audience has been mixed, with many expressing genuine shock and sadness over the loss of a character who had been central to the Dutton family saga for years .
Social media lit up immediately after the premiere. One fan commented on the official Marshals Instagram page, โCrazy killing off Monica ๐ข totally surprised meโ . Another viewer wrote, โGreat first episode, except that Monica was not with her family!โ . Some fans were so upset they vowed not to continue watching. โNot going to watch. I miss Monica. Without Monica this show is a dud,โ one user posted .
However, Grimes has promised viewers that Monicaโs presence will still be felt throughout the season. He told Parade that visiting Monicaโs grave was his favorite scene in the entire pilot. โThe whole thing with Kayce and Monica, itโs like Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers sort of thing,โ Grimes said. โAnd even if sheโs not around physically, clearly sheโs still very much aroundโ.

What Happens Next for Kayce and Tate in Marshals
With Monica gone, Marshals focuses on Kayce navigating his new reality as a single father while dealing with immense grief. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut revealed that the dynamic between Kayce and Tate will be a major focus. โThe first half of the season, Tate is having to drag his father into the reality that Monica is gone,โ Hudnut explained. โKayce is still grappling and refusing to embrace this grief. That journey is a big part of his seasonโ .
Despite the loss, the show will honor Monicaโs memory. Hudnut confirmed that her โspiritโ remains with Kayce throughout the series, and she will continue to guide him on his new path . As for romance, fans should not expect Kayce to move on anytime soon. Grimes and Hudnut have stated they have no intention of introducing a new love interest for Kayce, as it โwould feel like we were cheating if it happened anytime soonโ .
