Episode 6 of Cross Season 2, titled “Gather,” dropped on Prime Video Wednesday, and it finally revealed the method behind Luz’s campaign of violence. Actress Jeanine Mason broke down the scene where Alex Cross discovers the cultural legend driving her character’s actions, explaining why Luz believes she is justified. The episode confirms that Luz is following an ancient story to take down her targets, one by one.
The Legend of La Niña de las Flores Explained
After surviving a setup that left him injured, Detective Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) works to figure out who Luz will target next. He finds a mural covered in graffiti across from the Crestbrooke offices. With help from a professor, Alex learns the art connects to a story from old Lotería cards: the legend of La Niña de las Flores .
The story tells of a woman named Xóchitl, a rebel who was buried alive by her enemies. The dirt from her grave grew into the volcano Tacaná, an image tattooed on Luz’s back. To save her people, Xóchitl had to fight her way up the volcano, facing a demon guarding each level. Luz assigned a demon to each person on her list, matching them to a specific sin . Alex realizes she is killing her victims in the exact order of the demons from the legend.
Why Luz Sees Herself as Xóchitl
For Luz, this is not random violence. She sees herself as the hero of her own story, fighting a corrupt system. Her mission is to destroy the human trafficking organization responsible for her mother’s murder, which links back to billionaire Lance Durand (Matthew Lillard). A hidden photograph of Durand and his associates, which Luz found, serves as the foundation for her kill list .
Mason explained that the writing team built the season around Latine culture and mythology to give depth to her character. “They did such a great job of creating this rich dichotomy,” Mason said. She noted the unsettling nature of watching someone so certain about their mission, someone who has been planning this for ten years.

In her interview, Mason addressed the moral questions surrounding Luz. “She’s so into the mission and the end goal,” she stated. “And that’s the thing about bads, is that they can justify anything in the way of them arriving at what they perceive to be a better world, a more equitable world, a more fair world” .
This line cuts to the core of the season. While Luz believes she is delivering justice by only killing the guilty, the show makes it clear that innocent people have become collateral damage. Showrunner Ben Watkins said he wanted to create a vigilante that audiences would root for, only to later question if they were supporting the wrong person .
