The first season of FXโ€™s The Beauty ended on March 4, 2026, with a giant question mark. Fans watched as Evan Petersโ€™ character, FBI agent Cooper Madsen, entered a transformation cocoon for the second time. His friends watched in horror as a hand reached out, but the screen went black before anyone saw whoโ€”or whatโ€”emerged .

The big question is whether the โ€œcureโ€ actually worked. Here is what the cast, creators, and showโ€™s logic tell us about that shocking final scene.

What Happened in the Finale?

To understand the cliffhanger, we have to look at where Cooper started. Earlier in the season, Cooper purposely infected himself with The Beauty to get close to the villain, Byron Forst (Ashton Kutcher). But the plan went wrong. Instead of turning into a handsome adult, he transformed into a 12-year-old boy, played by Hudson Barry .

In the final episode, a scientist named Dr. Diana Sterling (Ari Graynor) claimed she had developed an antidote. Cooper was desperate to get his old body back and agreed to be the test subject. He took the untested cure and immediately collapsed, his body covered in dark veins before he disappeared into a new cocoon .

The episode ended with his partner Jordan (Jessica Alexander), Antonio (Anthony Ramos), and Jeremy (Jeremy Pope) staring at the cocoon. A hand broke through, and their faces showed pure shock. Viewers never saw what they saw .

Even the Cast Does Not Know

Here is the honest truth: the actors themselves have no idea what came out of that cocoon. They filmed the scene without knowing the answer.

During an interview, Jessica Alexander admitted the cast was kept in the dark. She said they were reacting to a stuntman with a sticky note on his hand waving at them. They did not know if the result was supposed to be beautiful, monstrous, or something else entirely .

Jeremy Pope confirmed the mystery. He joked that the person coming out could be anyone from Oprah to Beyoncรฉ. He explained that Ryan Murphy wanted the actors to play different reactions each take. Some takes were hopeful. Others were terrified. They gave variations because there was no right answer on set that day .

Evan Peters himself is just as curious as the fans. When asked if he would return for a second season, he said, “I don’t know either. I’m curious to see.” He explained that the comic book the show is based on takes place after The Beauty has been out in the world for a while. That means the first season was basically an origin story .

The Warning Signs: Why the Cure Might Have Failed

The show gave viewers several reasons to worry that the cure did not work.

Earlier in the finale, a teenage girl named Bella tried to get The Beauty through the black market. She took a double dose and ended up as a deformed, monstrous creature hiding in a closet. Her transformation was one of the most disturbing moments of the series .

Director Michael Uppendahl explained that the team built a special set for that scene. They dug out the floor so the actress could be lowered into it. Puppeteers manipulated her body while she acted from inside a full monster suit. The goal was to show the absolute worst-case scenario of what can happen when the drug goes wrong .

Cooperโ€™s situation was differentโ€”he took a supposed cure, not a double doseโ€”but the show made it clear that tampering with The Beauty is extremely dangerous.

Could Cooper Be a Different Person?

There is another possibility. The show has a pattern of actors changing after transformation. Isabella Rossellini played the original Franny, but after she was injected against her will, she became Nicola Peltz Beckham . The assassin went from Teddy Caรฑez to Anthony Ramos . Jordan went from Rebecca Hall to Jessica Alexander .

So even if the cure “worked,” Cooper might not come back as Evan Peters. He could emerge as a completely new actor. The horrified looks on his friends’ faces suggest that whoever came out was not the Cooper they expected.

Ashton Kutcher said he was surprised by the transformation twists himself. He only found out Nicola Peltz Beckham was playing the new Franny when he saw her name on the call sheet. His wife Mila Kunis had to explain who she was .

The Characters Who Refused the Cure

Another clue comes from the other characters. When offered the same cure, Jordan, Antonio, and Jeremy all refused. They realized they liked their new, younger, more beautiful bodies too much to give them up .

Anthony Ramos explained that the Assassin was saved by The Beauty. It changed his life and made him feel good. Even knowing the risks, his character was not ready to go back to who he was before. Jeremy Pope added that The Beauty gave his character meaning and confidence. Letting go of that was too hard .

Their refusal highlights how addictive The Beauty is. It also makes Cooper’s choice more desperate. He was willing to risk everything just to stop being a child.

Is There a Season 2?

As of now, FX has not renewed The Beauty for a second season . But the creative team clearly left the door open.

Michael Uppendahl, who directed multiple episodes, said the finale was designed to set up a much bigger world. He revealed that during filming, he would tell the actors different things were coming out of the cocoon just to get genuine reactions. At one point, he told them it was basketball player Shaquille Oโ€˜Neal .

Evan Peters also hinted that if the show continues, the scale could get much bigger. He said the finale sets things up for a season 2 to explore a world that has The Beauty unleashed on a larger scale. It made him want to read and watch what happens next.

What We Think Really Happened

Based on everything the cast and creators have said, here is the most likely answer.

The cure probably did not work perfectly. The show has been consistent about one rule: every transformation comes with a cost. Even the “successful” transformations cause people to lose their old identities. Bella’s failed transformation showed the horrific alternative.

The reactions from Jordan, Antonio, and Jeremy were not just surprise. They were shock and horror mixed together . Jessica Alexander said the cast gave variations of screams and gasps because they did not know what they were reacting to. But the final edit chose the most extreme takes.

Cooper likely came back wrong. Maybe he is a monster. Maybe he is a completely different person. Maybe he is a child again. But the show wants fans to sit with that uncertainty untilโ€”and ifโ€”a second season arrives.

For now, the question of whether the transformation can be reversed remains unanswered. The characters are stuck waiting. The actors are stuck waiting. And the audience is stuck waiting right along with them.

The Beauty Season 1 is now streaming on Hulu.
