The first trailer for Guy Ritchie‘s action thriller In The Grey has arrived, showing Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal as elite operatives tasked with stealing back a billion-dollar fortune. Black Bear released the footage on March 9, confirming the film will hit theaters on May 15, 2026.
The two-minute trailer offers a fast-paced look at Ritchie’s signature blend of sharp dialogue, explosive set pieces, and morally complex characters. Cavill plays Sid, a no-nonsense British specialist, while Gyllenhaal portrays Bronco, his cocky American counterpart. Eiza González stars as Sophia, the handler who coordinates their high-stakes mission.
The Story Behind the Title
The film’s title comes from a line in the trailer where González’s character explains the team’s unique position. “They work between the moral and the immoral. The black and the white,” she says. “They operate in the grey” .
According to the official synopsis, the story follows a covert team of elite operatives who live in the global shadows. These professionals are as comfortable wielding power and influence as they are with automatic weapons and high explosives. When a ruthless despot named Salazar steals a billion-dollar fortune, the team gets sent to recover it on what would be a suicide mission for anyone else .
What begins as an impossible heist quickly escalates. The mission spirals into an all-out war of strategy, deception, and survival as the operatives face off against a private island protected by its own militia .
A Stacked Ensemble Cast
Beyond the three leads, In The Grey boasts an impressive lineup of supporting talent. Rosamund Pike joins the cast, along with Kristofer Hivju, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jason Wong, Michael Vu, Fisher Stevens, and Carlos Bardem .
The film marks another collaboration between Ritchie and several of his actors. Cavill previously worked with the director on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and 2024’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. González also starred in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, while Gyllenhaal teamed with Ritchie for 2023’s The Covenant .
Cavill spoke positively about working with Ritchie during a 2024 interview. “It felt comfortable,” he told MovieWeb. “Guy is really good at creating an environment where creativity feels safe. He’s a really good leader on set. He gives everyone their room to shine as well” .
The Long Road to Release
In The Grey has traveled a complicated path to the big screen. The project first got announced in 2023 and completed production later that year after receiving an interim agreement that allowed actors to work during the SAG-AFTRA strike .
Lionsgate originally acquired U.S. distribution rights in October 2023 and scheduled the film for a January 17, 2025 release. But the studio quietly pulled it from the calendar in November 2024 as post-production continued .
The distribution situation shifted again when Black Bear launched its own U.S. distribution operation. The indie studio acquired domestic rights from Lionsgate, which continues to handle digital and pay-TV distribution as part of a collaboration between the two companies .
Black Bear initially set an April 10, 2026 release date in January. But the studio later moved the film to May 15, 2026, giving the marketing campaign more room to build momentum .
Benjamin Kramer, president of U.S. distribution at Black Bear, expressed enthusiasm about the project in a January statement. “Guy is one of the all-time greats when it comes to creating action as fun as it is gripping,” Kramer said. “In The Grey features every ounce of his trademark style and wit, not to mention a hugely talented cast led by Jake, Henry, and Eiza” .
What the Trailer Reveals
The newly released footage gives audiences their first real look at the film’s tone and visual style. Early scenes show Gyllenhaal, Cavill, and González strategizing in high-pressure situations, negotiating with dangerous adversaries, and executing a complex island heist .
The trailer captures Ritchie’s trademark approach: rapid-fire dialogue, stylized action sequences, and a sharp blend of suspense and dark humor. Cavill and Gyllenhaal’s characters demonstrate flawless teamwork, suggesting a classic buddy dynamic at the film’s core .
Ritchie wrote the script and produces alongside John Friedberg, Dave Caplan, and Ivan Atkinson. Friedberg produces for Black Bear, while Ritchie and Atkinson produce for Toff Guy. Caplan produces for C2 .
