Fans waiting for the second season of Netflix’s live-action One Piece need to remember where the Straw Hat Pirates left off. The first season covered a lot of ground, introducing Monkey D. Luffy and his first crewmates as they set sail from the East Blue. The final episodes delivered major battles, emotional goodbyes, and a tease of what is coming next. Here is a complete recap of the essential moments from season one before the adventure continues.

Luffy Begins His Journey to Find the One Piece

The series opens with a young Monkey D. Luffy watching the Red-Haired Pirates led by Shanks in his home village. After Shanks sacrifices his arm to save Luffy from a sea monster, he gives the boy his treasured straw hat. The hat becomes Luffy’s most prized possession and a symbol of his promise to become a great pirate .

Years later, Luffy sets out to sea alone. He eats the Gum-Gum Fruit as a child, which gives his body rubber properties but takes away his ability to swim forever. His first encounter is with Alvida, a pirate captain, and her cabin boy Koby. Luffy defeats Alvida easily and befriends Koby, who dreams of joining the Marines. The two part ways after Luffy learns about a powerful swordsman named Roronoa Zoro .

Zoro Joins the Crew at Shells Town

Luffy arrives at a Marine base in Shells Town where Zoro is tied to a pole. The son of Captain Morgan, Helmeppo, captured Zoro after the swordsman protected a little girl. Luffy cuts Zoro loose and asks him to join his crew. Zoro agrees after Luffy retrieves his swords. Together they defeat Captain Morgan and Helmeppo. The townspeople celebrate their freedom while Luffy and Zoro sail away as the first two members of the Straw Hat crew .

Nami’s Deal and the Battle Against Buggy

The pair next meet Nami, a skilled navigator who steals from pirates. She tricks Luffy but eventually agrees to travel with them, though her motives remain unclear. They face Buggy the Clown, a pirate whose Chop-Chop Fruit allows him to split his body into pieces. Buggy holds a town hostage until Luffy defeats him by using his rubber powers to launch Buggy into the sky. Nami steals Buggy’s Grand Line maps and stays with the crew, still hiding her true intentions .

Usopp and the Battle Against Captain Kuro

The Straw Hats arrive in Syrup Village and meet Usopp, a young man known for telling tall tales. Usopp’s friend Kaya is a sickly heiress whose butler Klahadore is actually Captain Kuro, a ruthless pirate faking his death. Kuro plans to kill Kaya and steal her fortune. Luffy, Zoro, and Nami help Usopp defend the village. After Kuro’s defeat, Kaya gives the Straw Hats their first real ship, the Going Merry. Usopp joins the crew as their sniper .

Sanji Joins at the Floating Restaurant Baratie

The crew stops at Baratie, a restaurant ship floating in the ocean. Here they meet Sanji, a talented cook who dreams of finding the All Blue, a legendary sea with fish from all over the world. The Baratie comes under attack by Don Krieg, a warlord desperate to return to the Grand Line. During the battle, the world’s greatest swordsman Dracule Mihawk appears. Zoro challenges Mihawk but loses badly, receiving a chest wound and vowing to never lose again. Sanji chooses to leave with Luffy after the restaurant owner Zeff, who raised Sanji, encourages him to follow his dream .

Arlong Park and Nami’s True Story

The crew follows Nami to her home village of Cocoyashi, which is controlled by the fish-man pirate Arlong. It is revealed that Arlong forced Nami to work for him for years, drawing maps in exchange for buying back her village’s freedom. When corrupt Marine Captain Nezumi steals the money Nami saved, she finally breaks down and asks Luffy for help. Luffy destroys Arlong Park and defeats Arlong, freeing the village. Nami officially joins the crew as their navigator .

Luffy Meets His Grandfather and Gets His First Bounty

After the victory at Arlong Park, Vice Admiral Garp arrives. Garp is Luffy’s grandfather, a high-ranking Marine who wants Luffy to give up piracy. Garp attacks Luffy to test his resolve, but Luffy refuses to abandon his dream. Garp lets the Straw Hats go and later arranges for Luffy to receive his first wanted poster. Luffy’s bounty is set at 30,000,000 Berry, marking him as a serious threat in the East Blue. Zoro, Sanji, and even the clown Buggy also receive wanted posters .

Shanks Celebrates and Buggy Plans Revenge

News of Luffy’s bounty spreads across the seas. Shanks and his crew hear the news and celebrate with a toast, proud of the boy who inherited the straw hat. Meanwhile, Buggy and Alvida, now working together, learn of Luffy’s growing reputation and vow to get revenge on the man who defeated them both.

The Mystery Man in the Final Scene

The season ends with a brief shot of a man smoking two cigars. He burns a hole through Luffy’s wanted poster with one of them. The man is Captain Smoker, a Marine captain stationed at Loguetown, the town where the Pirate King Gol D. Roger was born and executed. Smoker has the Smoke-Smoke Fruit power, which turns his body into smoke and makes him a dangerous opponent for Luffy. His appearance sets up the next part of the story, which takes place in Loguetown before the crew enters the Grand Line .

The Straw Hat Crew Heads for the Grand Line

The Straw Hat crew sails away from the East Blue with their full original lineup complete. Luffy captains the ship with Zoro as his swordsman, Nami as navigator, Usopp as sniper, and Sanji as cook. They ride the Going Merry toward the Calm Belt and the entrance to the Grand Line, the most dangerous sea in the world where the strongest pirates gather. The final moments capture the crew’s excitement and determination to find the One Piece .
