The March 23 episode of The Rookie, titled “Spy Games,” brought together the full Mid-Wilshire team for a high-stakes operation. The hour combined a covert mission to protect Bailey Nune with a political scandal threatening Wesley Evers‘ campaign for District Attorney. Viewers saw familiar faces return, including a surprising appearance from a past villain and a key moment between exes that changed the race for DA.
The Main Cast of Episode 12
The episode featured the complete main cast of the ABC drama. Nathan Fillion returned as John Nolan, the former rookie who now leads the operation to protect his wife. Jenna Dewan played Bailey Nune, whose Pentagon assignment led to a dangerous situation requiring FBI and LAPD intervention.
Shawn Ashmore starred as Wesley Evers, facing a public accusation that threatened both his campaign and his marriage. Alyssa Diaz appeared as Angela Lopez, Wesley’s wife, who had to navigate her husband’s past with his ex while staying strong for her family.
Eric Winter played Tim Bradford, the new Watch Commander who found himself missing field work. Melissa O’Neil returned as Lucy Chen, who encouraged Tim to make the job his own while continuing to support her partner.
Mekia Cox appeared as Nyla Harper, Richard T. Jones played Wade Grey, Lisseth Chavez starred as Celina Juarez, and Deric Augustine rounded out the main cast as Miles Penn.
Bridget Regan Returns as Monica Stevens
One of the episode’s most talked-about moments came from Bridget Regan‘s return as Monica Stevens. The character, who has a complicated history with Wesley, found herself in an unexpected position when Wesley and Angela needed her help.
Wesley’s opponent Vivian (played by Necar Zadegan) set up a public scene where Elijah Stone (played by Brandon Jay McLaren) accused Wesley of cheating on Angela with Monica. To clear his name, Wesley had to ask his ex to deny the affair.
Shawn Ashmore spoke about the scene where Wesley meets Monica to apologize:
“I think that might’ve been the case except that Wesley takes responsibility for what he did to her. And instead of defending himself, he acknowledges 100% and, not in a way because he’s trying to get something. I think he knows that he cheated on her and hurt her. … When Monica sits down with Wesley, she almost becomes that person in a way. And so that’s why I love that scene.”
Monica eventually released a video statement denying the affair, also pointing out that Vivian stood to gain the most from the lie.
Brandon Jay McLaren Returns as Elijah Stone
Brandon Jay McLaren made a brief return as Elijah Stone, the villain who previously caused problems for Wesley and Angela. Vivian arranged for Elijah to be brought from maximum security prison to the courthouse steps, where he falsely accused Wesley of cheating.
The scene lasted only about a minute but created major problems for Wesley’s campaign. While some viewers appreciated seeing the character again, others felt the return did not give the villain enough to do.
What Happened with Bailey and the Spy Games
The episode’s main action centered on Bailey, who found herself targeted by assassins after her work at the Pentagon. The FBI and LAPD joined forces on a covert operation to keep her safe. Nolan led the team through a sting operation that involved planting recording devices and tracking the people after his wife.
Bailey realized during the episode that the D.C. job was not what she expected. She decided to move back to Los Angeles and return home to Nolan, resolving the tension that had built between them over the season.
Tim and Lucy’s Relationship Progresses
Tim Bradford spent much of the episode dealing with his new role as Watch Commander. He realized he felt bored behind a desk, but Lucy pointed out there was no reason he could not make the job his own while still doing field work.
The two worked together during the operation, with a standout moment showing them tasing two attackers in sync. They also shared domestic moments that showed their relationship continuing to grow.
Eric Winter recently shared his thoughts on where Tim and Lucy’s relationship could go:
“I feel like that would be a natural progression for them. I think Tim has learned from his mistakes. He’s in it for the long haul, and wants to build a future, and sees that future.”
