The new DC series Lanterns coming to HBO is doing something very different with the superhero genre. Instead of big space battles and alien worlds, the show follows two Green Lanterns investigating a killing in rural Nebraska. The first teaser trailer dropped on March 4, 2026, and it shows Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart acting more like tired detectives than cosmic heroes. The eight-episode series arrives on HBO Max in August 2026.

A Superhero Show That Looks Like True Detective

The creative team behind Lanterns includes Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). They built the series around a simple idea: take two space cops, remove the space, and put them in a small American town. The show follows Jordan and Stewart as they look into a murder in the American heartland. What seems like a regular crime turns into something much bigger.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn described the approach clearly. He said the show takes “this outlandish concept of space cops with magic rings and putting it in as close to reality as it can possibly be”. The series focuses on the relationship between the two Lanterns and the mystery they need to solve.

The First Teaser Shows a Very Different Kind of Hero

The teaser trailer gives fans their first real look at the show’s tone. One scene shows Hal Jordan driving a car off a cliff with John Stewart inside. Jordan wants to see if Stewart is ready to use his power ring in a real emergency. The moment mixes action with a test of character. The trailer also shows Jordan roughing up a suspect in an interrogation room. These are not clean, perfect heroes. They are flawed people doing difficult work.

The show’s creators have been clear about their goals. Mundy said the team wanted to deliver “a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion”. The goal was making something “timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material”.

Fans Questioned the Lack of Green in the Trailer

After the teaser came out, some DC fans noticed something missing. The trailer did not show much of the color green. One fan wrote on X, “Oh my god bruh where is the GREEN he’s a GREEN LANTERN”. HBO Max responded directly with humor. The platform replied, “What do you mean there’s no green?” and included an image of a green plastic basket. The exchange got over 761,000 views.

But the conversation did not end there. Damon Lindelof faced criticism after old comments from 2024 resurfaced. On a comedy podcast, he said the creative team agreed “that the ‘Green’ was stupid, so now it’s just Lanterns”. Comic writer Grant Morrison, who wrote a famous Green Lantern comic run from 2018 to 2021, responded strongly. Morrison wrote, “TV writer/producer Damon Lindelof’s comments notwithstanding, the ‘Green’ in ‘Green Lantern(s)’ is not ‘stupid’”.

Lindelof later apologized on Instagram. He called his joke “dumb” and “sloppy and careless”. He shared a photo from 2004 wearing a green Green Lantern T-shirt, which he called his “favorite” at the time. He wrote, “green is not stupid, it is my lifelong favorite color”.

The Full Cast Brings the Small Town to Life

Lanterns has a large supporting cast that adds depth to the murder mystery. Kelly Macdonald plays Sheriff Kerry, described as a “no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town”. Garret Dillahunt takes the role of William Macon, a “modern cowboy” and “self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man”. Poorna Jagannathan plays Zoe, who is reportedly John Stewart’s love interest.

Ulrich Thomsen joins the cast as Sinestro, the famous Green Lantern villain. The character is a former Green Lantern who turned rogue. Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner, a role he first played in James Gunn’s Superman movie. Fillion described his character simply: “He’s a jerk”. He added, “You don’t have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless”.

Other cast members include Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Chris Coy as a mysterious truck driver named Waylon Sanders, and Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, an alien “devoted to exposing the truth”. Laura Linney and Paula Patton have also joined in undisclosed roles.

Release Date and Where to Watch

Lanterns premieres on HBO and streams on HBO Max in August 2026. The exact date has not been announced yet. The series will have eight episodes total. Production started in February 2025 in Los Angeles and finished in July 2025.

The show is part of DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It arrives after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 26, 2026. Clayface follows on October 23, 2026.
