Apple TV+ has officially given the green light for more adventures of television’s most awkward security android. Murderbot Season 2 is officially happening, and fans of the dry sci-fi comedy can look forward to seeing Alexander Skarsgård reprise his role as the socially anxious SecUnit.

The renewal came early. Apple announced the second season before the first season even finished its run back in July 2025. The show has been a hit for the streaming platform, mixing action with a very relatable character who just wants to be left alone to watch TV.

When Will Murderbot Season 2 Release on Apple TV+

The second season does not have an exact release date yet. However, production reports suggest viewers will likely see the show return around late 2026 or early 2027.

There are a few reasons for this timeline. The production is moving locations. While the first season filmed in Toronto, Murderbot Season 2 is shifting to Europe. Reports confirm that filming will take place in Madrid, Spain, and Dublin, Ireland. Moving an entire production across the ocean takes time.

The working title for the new season is “Sanctuary,” which is a fun nod to the soap opera the Murderbot loves to watch. For viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India, the show will remain exclusive to Apple TV+ whenever it returns.

The Main Cast Is Coming Back for the New Season

Fans of the first season’s team can breathe easy. The main cast is expected to return.

Alongside Alexander Skarsgård as the lead SecUnit, viewers will see:

  • Noma Dumezweni as Dr. Mensah
  • David Dastmalchian as Dr. Gurathin
  • Sabrina Wu as Pin-Lee
  • Akshay Khanna as Ratthi
  • Tamara Podemski as Bharadwaj
  • Tattiawna Jones as Arada

The actors have shown excitement about returning. Tamara Podemski talked about the joy of working on the show.

“I hope so. I would be thrilled. I love this character. I love the show. I would be very, very, very excited to come back and do it over and over and over again.”

Akshay Khanna agreed, saying the show was one of the best work experiences he has had.

What the Story Will Look Like in Season 2

Murderbot Season 2 will likely adapt the second book in Martha Wells’ series, titled Artificial Condition. This means a big shift in tone and setting.

The first season was about Murderbot learning to work with a team. The new season will see the character go out on its own. The story moves to a massive, abandoned mining facility called RaviHyral. This allows the show to explore a darker, more cyberpunk look.

Expect more neon lights, dark corridors, and a grimy industrial feel compared to the first season. The showrunners, Chris and Paul Weitz, are planning to keep the cast together for the show, even though the book features a more solo journey. This choice allows the show to keep the strong chemistry between Skarsgård and Dumezweni alive.

The plot will focus on Murderbot investigating its own past. It will dig into the violent incident that caused it to hack its own governor module. This journey will bring it into direct conflict with the GrayCris corporation, raising the stakes significantly.

Changes in Production and Filming Locations

A major update for the upcoming chapter is the change in scenery. Murderbot Season 2 is leaving North America for Europe.

Production is scheduled to take place in Madrid and Dublin. This move is likely to accommodate the new, grittier visual style of the cyberpunk setting. Moving to Europe allows the crew to access different types of architecture and studio spaces that fit the Artificial Condition storyline better than the Toronto locations did.

While this move is exciting for the visual palette of the show, it is also a logistical challenge. This explains why the release date is further out than some fans might hope.

What to Expect from Alexander Skarsgård’s Character

Alexander Skarsgård will have more to do in the second season emotionally. While the first season focused on the awkward humor of a robot hating human interaction, the second season dives into trauma.

The story deals with the “murder” in Murderbot’s name. The character wiped large portions of its memory to cope with a traumatic event where it lost control and killed several humans. Season 2 will force the character to face those hidden memories.

Skarsgård is expected to balance the same deadpan humor with deeper dramatic moments. The character will still hate making small talk and will still obsess over Sanctuary Moon, but now there is a mystery underneath the surface.
