What to Know Before Watching Episode 4

The first three episodes set up the world of The Testaments. The show takes place four years after the ending of The Handmaid’s Tale. Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd) runs a school for girls who are being trained to become wives in Gilead. Agnes is actually the daughter of June Osborne (from The Handmaid’s Tale), though she does not know this yet.

The series changes some details from Margaret Atwood’s 2019 book. Showrunner Bruce Miller explained to The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m trying to not necessarily take things in the order they happen in the book, but to take the big central elements and move them into a timeline that makes as much sense as we can.”

Episode 3 ended with a big moment. An incident on a school trip brought back Daisy’s memories of Toronto. This revealed her past and a world destroyed by violence. The Testaments Episode 4 will likely build on this as both girls face hard truths about their lives in Gilead.
