The new Netflix crime comedy Big Mistakes started streaming on April 9, 2026. Created by Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek) and Rachel Sennott (I Love LA), the show brings eight episodes of dark humor mixed with organized crime chaos. The series follows two siblings who steal a necklace and accidentally enter the dangerous world of gangsters and mafia bosses.
If you are wondering whether to add this to your watchlist, here is everything you need to know about the show, what critics say, and what viewers think.
What Is Big Mistakes Actually About?
The story centers on Nicky Dardano, played by Dan Levy, a pastor trying to balance his faith and his secret relationship with his boyfriend. His sister Morgan, played by Taylor Ortega, gave up on acting dreams and now works as an elementary school teacher. Their mother Linda, played by Laurie Metcalf, runs a hardware store and campaigns for mayor.
The trouble starts when the family wants to celebrate their dying grandmother’s last birthday. Linda asks Nicky and Morgan to find a special gift. The siblings find a cheap diamond necklace at a convenience store. When the store clerk Yusuf refuses to sell it, they steal it. This small crime pulls them into a world of Russian mobsters, Italian mafia, and deadly consequences.
The clerk works for a criminal boss named Ivan. He demands the necklace back. The siblings dig up their grandmother’s grave to retrieve it. From there, things get worse as Ivan blackmails them into doing dangerous jobs.
Cast and Characters
The show brings together a strong group of actors:
- Dan Levy as Nicky Dardano, a gay pastor hiding his relationship
- Taylor Ortega as Morgan Dardano, the impulsive sister
- Laurie Metcalf as Linda Dardano, the overbearing mother running for mayor
- Boran Kuzum as Yusuf, the store clerk with mob connections
- Mark Ivanir as Ivan, the Russian mob boss
- Jack Innanen as Max, Morgan’s boyfriend
- Abby Quinn as Natalie, the youngest Dardano sibling
- Elizabeth Perkins as Annette Zofrea, Max’s mother
- Jacob Gutierrez as Tareq, Nicky’s boyfriend
The sibling chemistry between Levy and Ortega has received the most praise from reviewers. Ortega originally replaced Rachel Sennott in the role when Sennott had to focus on her HBO show I Love LA.
What Critics Are Saying
The show holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, which is slightly higher than Schitt’s Creek’s 93% score. The audience score sits at 80%.
Samantha Coley from Collider said the show is “a bold, action-packed, often suspenseful, and at times uncomfortable crime thriller that operates at a speed that would break traffic laws in Schitt’s Creek.” Mashable’s Belen Edwards called Levy and Ortega “a stellar comedy duo” who feed on “each other’s frenetic energy.”
The Hashtag Show described Big Mistakes as “a breath of fresh air in the comedy genre” and noted that “society needs something as silly as this.”
However, not everyone loved it. Variety noted that the series “wastes a perfect cast on a lacking plot.” ScreenRant called the storytelling “frustratingly chaotic and inconsistent” and said the show never gives viewers enough answers. The Guardian pointed out “many clumsy and implausible elements” in the story.
Where Does the Story Go?
The eight episodes run between 31 to 37 minutes each. The fast pace keeps viewers pressing play on the next episode.
The sibling duo fails upward through each episode. They handle cattle auctions for criminals, survive trips to Miami, and face the Brazilian cartel. Episode 5, titled ‘James 4:17’, sends them to buy cattle where Morgan and Yusuf grow closer.
The season finale reveals that Annette Zofrea is the real criminal mastermind. She forces Morgan to agree to marry her son Max. Yusuf also betrays Ivan to the Italian mob bosses, which gets Ivan and the cartel leaders killed.

Should You Watch or Skip?
Watch if you enjoy dark comedies with fast pacing and don’t mind flawed characters. The show works best when you accept the absurd situations and focus on the family drama and jokes.
Skip if you want logical storytelling or character development. The crime plot has holes, and the show moves so fast that deeper moments get lost.
The show is not Schitt’s Creek. It does not have warm moments or emotional growth. Instead, it gives you chaotic siblings, bloody shootouts, and a stolen necklace that ruins everyone’s life.
Big Mistakes streams now on Netflix in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and all other regions where Netflix is available.
