The actor names his on-screen husband as his top pick to share the stage with, while also praising other co-stars.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, known for playing Mitchell Pritchett on the hit ABC show Modern Family, recently opened up about which former co-star he dreams of working with again. The 50-year-old actor didn’t pick just anyone. He wants to reunite with Eric Stonestreet, the man who played his husband, Cameron Tucker, for 11 seasons.
But Ferguson doesn’t see them getting back together for a TV show or movie. Instead, he wants to bring their partnership to the Broadway stage.
Ferguson Picks Stonestreet for a Stage Reunion
While attending the opening night of Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway, Jesse Tyler Ferguson told PEOPLE magazine exactly who he would want by his side in a theater production. His answer was clear and quick: Eric Stonestreet.
“We have been pitched ideas before. It just never has felt right.”
Ferguson shared that people have brought him show ideas for him and Stonestreet before. But so far, none of those projects have worked out. The timing or the material just didn’t match what they were looking for.
The actor explained that watching The Bear co-stars Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach perform together on stage made him think about his own former TV partner.
Ferguson Praises Other Modern Family Co-Stars Too
Even though Stonestreet is his first choice, Ferguson made sure to give credit to other actors from the show. He said he would be happy to work with “any” of his old castmates on a Broadway stage.
“I mean, Sarah Hyland‘s a beast on stage and I would love to be with her on stage too. Ty Burrell, I used to see on stage when he was starting off in his career. So yeah, I mean any of them really, but of course I’m going to say Eric.”
Sarah Hyland just finished a run playing Connie Francis in the Broadway show Just in Time. Ferguson went to see her perform and shared photos on Instagram back in November 2025, showing his support.
Ty Burrell, who played Phil Dunphy on the show, worked on stage earlier in his career before becoming a TV star. Ferguson remembers watching him perform back then.
The Modern Family Spinoff That Did Not Happen
Ferguson also talked about a Modern Family spinoff idea that came up during the Covid-19 pandemic. The show would have followed Mitchell and Cameron in a new setting. Fans of the show might remember that the characters moved to Missouri in the final season.
“I was interested, but I was also supposed to do this play in New York. It sort of felt like, as the reality of, maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my god, I want to date other people.’”
The actor said he liked the idea at first. But when it started to feel real, he realized he wanted to try other roles and new projects. He had a play waiting for him in New York, so he chose to do that instead.
Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson played one of TV’s most loved couples. Mitchell was the careful, logical lawyer. Cameron was the loud, emotional former farm boy from Missouri. Their opposite personalities made their scenes funny and real for millions of viewers.

A Friendship That Lasts After the Show Ended
Modern Family said goodbye to fans in April 2020 after 11 seasons. But the friendship between Ferguson and Stonestreet did not end when the cameras stopped rolling.
The two actors met up for an episode of Ferguson’s podcast, Dinner’s On Me, in January 2026. Stonestreet had been the last main cast member to appear on the show.
During that podcast, they remembered a funny moment from the set. The show’s casting director, Jeff Greenberg, once walked straight into a glass wall near the food table.
“It’s the greatest moment ever. We taped off his face mark, remember? His face mark lived that whole season.”
Ferguson added, laughing at the memory.
“I can’t believe that happened. He just walked right towards us.”
The two also talked about their “first date” as co-stars. They went to lunch on Valentine’s Day without realizing what day it was. They walked into a coffee shop full of couples and only then figured out why there were so many people around.
Stonestreet also likes to play jokes on his former TV husband. In March 2026, he posted an old-looking photo of Ferguson on Instagram with the caption, “Um Jesse. Call me please.” Ferguson replied, “I’m speechless.”
When Stonestreet married Lindsay Schweitzer, Ferguson shared his happiness online, writing, “Of all second marriages, this one is my favorite! I love you both! I’m so happy for you!!!!”
Modern Family is available to stream on Peacock for those who want to watch Mitchell and Cameron again.
