The new K-drama Perfect Crown dropped its second episode on April 11, 2026, and the show is already moving fast. What started as a bold marriage proposal from a determined businesswoman turned into a full-blown royal scandal by the end of the episode. And somehow, that scandal pushed the Grand Prince to finally say yes.
The MBC drama stars IU as Seong Hui-ju, an ambitious heiress, and Byeon Woo-seok as Grand Prince I-yan, a royal who holds a title but very little real power. Episode 2 took viewers on a ride filled with past secrets, public rumors, and a contract marriage agreement that will change everything for both characters.
Hui-ju Refuses To Take No For An Answer
Episode 2 starts right where the first episode ended. Hui-ju walks into I-yan’s residence and asks him directly to marry her. She lists her strengths clearly. Her wealth, her business skills, her looks, and even her difficult family background as an illegitimate daughter. She tells him exactly what she brings to the table.
But I-yan rejects her without any hesitation. He says he wants to marry for love, not for convenience. For most people, that rejection would be the end of it. Not for Hui-ju.
The episode then shows a flashback to their school days at Seonggyungwan. They all took part in an archery competition. I-yan scored the highest points but purposely missed the final target, letting Hui-ju and her teammate win. Hui-ju kept the flowers she received that day for years. She knew he lost on purpose, and that knowledge fuels her belief that he actually cares about her.
After the rejection, Hui-ju only tries harder. She gets a background check on I-yan and learns his daily schedule. Then she starts showing up everywhere he goes. The horse riding club, the movie theater, the restaurants. Each time she acts like it is just a coincidence. She flirts openly and tells him she misses him. I-yan gets irritated at first, but viewers can see him slowly becoming aware of her presence in a different way.
The Queen Mother’s Dark Secret Comes To Light
While Hui-ju chases after I-yan, the palace has its own problems. The Queen Mother Yi-rang wants full control over the young King, who is only eight years old. She believes I-yan will try to take the throne from her son one day.
The episode reveals a major secret through her memories. On the day the late King planned to give up his position, Yi-rang burned the official papers in anger. She said she would rather see him dead. Soon after, a fire broke out and the King died. She is the reason the King is gone, though it is not clear yet if she directly caused the fire or just let it happen.
I-yan still has nightmares about that day. When he arrived at the scene, his only concern was saving his young nephew. The trauma stays with him and affects his sleep even now. His assistant Choi Hyeon tries to take care of him, but I-yan refuses to see royal doctors because most of them work for the Queen Mother.
This backstory explains why I-yan keeps his distance from people and why he struggles to trust anyone. He has seen how power destroys families.
A Hotel Stay Creates A Major Scandal
The turning point of episode 2 happens when I-yan gets sick after a royal event. He stays at a hotel to avoid public attention. Choi Hyeon goes to get medicine and runs into Hui-ju, who is also staying at the same place.
Hui-ju calls her private doctor to check on I-yan. She even registers herself as the patient to keep his identity hidden. While the doctor treats him, she stays nearby. Choi Hyeon and Hui-ju share sandwiches and talk about I-yan’s struggles.
Then the Queen Mother shows up. She tracks I-yan’s location and walks into his room without warning. I-yan is only wearing a robe and asks her to wait outside. But she sees Hui-ju’s bag on the sofa and pushes her way back in. She catches them together and demands that I-yan explain himself at the palace the next day.
The next morning, the media explodes. News spreads that I-yan and Hui-ju spent the night together at a hotel. Some reports even suggest she might be pregnant because they saw a doctor entering the building. Hui-ju’s assistant calls her in a panic, but Hui-ju stays completely calm. She actually enjoys the attention and sees it as free publicity for her company.
The Queen Mother thinks this scandal will destroy both I-yan’s reputation and Hui-ju’s standing in society. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo, who clearly has feelings for Hui-ju, sees it as a perfect distraction from economic problems the government is facing.
The Marriage Deal Is Finally Made
Instead of going to the palace to face the Queen Mother, I-yan goes to his private residence. He asks Hui-ju to meet him there. When she arrives, the staff leaves them alone and gossips outside about what is happening.
I-yan apologizes for the scandal and explains that Hui-ju will now face public anger because of him. Then he asks her what she really wants.
Hui-ju speaks honestly. She says she has been looked down on her whole life because she was born outside of marriage. Her brother is incompetent but still gets more respect from their father. She runs Castle Beauty successfully, but the board of directors always overlooks her. Marrying I-yan will give her the social status she needs to finally silence everyone who doubts her.
She also tells him she knows he purposely lost the archery competition back in school. She does not need love from him. She needs power and recognition.
I-yan looks offended by her practical approach. He wanted someone who would love him for who he is, not for his title. But after thinking about everything, he agrees to the marriage. The episode ends with him telling her, “Prepare yourself to become the Grand Prince’s wife.”
Fan Reactions And Viewership Numbers
Perfect Crown got off to a strong start. The first episode recorded a 7.8% nationwide viewership rating, according to Nielsen Korea. In the Seoul area, it hit 8.2%. These are the third-highest premiere ratings for any MBC Friday-Saturday drama.

Many viewers are also talking about the Queen Mother’s role. One fan commented, “I hate the queen mother. She is the reason the former king died because she was greedy for power.” Another said, “I will be waiting for her to go to jail for whatever she has done.”
