Lee Chang-dong, one of South Korea’s most celebrated filmmakers, is making his long-awaited return with a new movie titled Possible Love. This marks his first feature film in eight years since his critically acclaimed 2018 movie Burning. The film will be released on Netflix and has already generated massive excitement among fans due to its star-studded cast.

The story follows two married couples living completely different lives. When their paths cross, their stable routines begin to crack under unexpected tensions. The film explores deep themes of love, conflict, and human relationships, a signature style of Lee Chang-dong’s storytelling.

Stellar Cast Reunites With Director Lee Chang-dong

The film brings together some of South Korea’s biggest acting talents. Jeon Do-yeon, who won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in Lee’s 2007 film Secret Sunshine, returns to work with the director after 18 years. She plays Mi-ok, a complex character requiring emotional depth.

Sul Kyung-gu, known for films like The Merciless and Kill Boksoon, takes on the role of Ho-seok, Mi-ok’s husband. This marks his third collaboration with Lee Chang-dong after Peppermint Candy and Oasis. Jeon and Sul have also worked together three times before, making their on-screen chemistry well-established.

The second couple is played by Zo In-sung (Moving, Escape from Mogadishu) as Sang-woo and Cho Yeo-jeong (Parasite, Hidden Face) as Ye-ji. This is their first time working with Lee Chang-dong, adding fresh energy to the project.

Fans React to the Stunning Cast Announcement

The casting news has sparked strong reactions online, with many fans calling it an “insane lineup”. Some expressed excitement, while others were surprised that the film will be a Netflix release instead of a theatrical one.

“Insane Cast,” a fan said.
“Jeon Do-yeon and In-sung… I was the casting director,” another user joked.
“Now girl this lineup is INSANE. The award season gonna be messy af,” a netizen wrote.

However, some fans were disappointed about the film skipping theaters.

“Seeing this as a Netflix announcement is like hearing the death knell of cinema sound next to my ear,” one fan commented.
“Love the cast but his first feature film after Burning being a Netflix original still doesn’t sit right with me,” another said.

Despite mixed reactions, many are eagerly waiting for the film’s release.

“Lee Chang-dong is back!!! And the twist is it’s a Netflix film. Didn’t expect my quietest director to return through the loudest platform. But I’m watching. I’m soooo watching,” a fan stated.

Lee Chang-dong’s Legacy and Possible Love’s Production

Lee Chang-dong is known for his deeply emotional and socially reflective films. His works like Oasis, Secret Sunshine, and Poetry have won major awards at Cannes and Venice Film Festivals. Burning, his last film, was also critically praised and shortlisted for an Academy Award.

For Possible Love, he reunites with Oh Jung-mi, his co-writer on Burning. The film is produced by Pinehouse Film, the same company behind Burning, along with Anonymous Content and NOWFILM.

The exact release date has not been confirmed, but production is underway. Given Lee Chang-dong’s track record, Possible Love is expected to be a strong contender in international film festivals before its Netflix debut.
